A tango-color woman
When she died, her funeral ceremony could have been compared to those paid to Egyptian pharaohs. Evita Peron, the Argentinean president’s wife, was Latin America’s most loved and most hated woman. To preserve Evita’s body imperishable, it was embalmed according to the ancient recipe. What’s more, five dummy bodies of Evita were made to mislead those for whom she was the symbol of good old Argentina. The body of the Princess of the Poor was doomed to wanderings throughout the world until it had found its final rest, while the location of her grave had been one of the major secrets of the country’s authorities. Only twelve years after, her body was repatriated. She was buried at a depth of eight meters, while the vault over her grave was equipped with one of the most reliable alarm system to avoid illicit exhumation. Dmitry Kharitonov’s film explains the extraordinary popularity of Evita Peron and tells about the incredible events that occurred after her death.

Why did Stalin give vodka back to the people and prohibit anti-alcoholic propaganda? Why did Molotov make the Japanese Minister of Foreign Office drunk? When the Russians first started drinking a bottle ‘for three’ in the USSR? Where did Brezhnev hide the drunkards during the Olympics-80? For decades, homosexuality was more than a forbidden topic in our country. Just years ago, homosexuals were persecuted and imprisoned. Clause 121 of Russia’s Criminal Code, under which over 250,000 people were punished, was repealed only in 1993. Similar repressions were existed only in Nazi Germany where homosexuals were sent to concentration camps. In the USSR, this Clause was applied to suppress dissidents, non-conformists and the rest of otherwise-minded who opposed to the existing regime. What has changed over the last nine years after the notorious clause was repealed? Can people speak openly of their sexual orientation? After that, some of them can be fired, others can be deprived of their right to medical treatment or beaten in the street. The Internet is probably the only way for these people to socialize and to love without awaiting punishment for that. There, on the Internet, they haven’t got to prove that they are not castaways, that they’re just a bit different than the rest of us.

Beyond the war
The War in Chechnya started ten years ago. A documentary film of Alexei Pobortsev “Beyond the War” is trying to give the reasons for this dreadful event. The unique evidences of the participants of those events who never before gave the interviews, of the politicians and generals who took the main decisions and whom the development of the situation around Chechnya depended on – all that is shown in the film. Who Dudaev is? How does it happen that the soviet general has come to Chechnya and become the irreconcilable separatists leader? For whose account has the so-called independent Chechnya lived and on what basis has its Army been formed? Why and how has the decision to bring the troops into the Republic been taken?
The first Chechen campaign lasted for two years. Bloody war, the aims of which have never been clear to ordinary people. The Presidential elections were coming. To stay in the President’s armchair Eltsin was to stop that war. How were they trying to do it tells the second part of the film “Beyond the War. Khasavyurt” . Brest. Fortress Heroes
The Brest Fortress was the first to stand on the way of the fascist blitzkrieg in June 1941and became a symbol of heroism for all Russian people. A lot of us remember the reproduction of the classical painting “Defenders of the Brest Fortress” by Pyotr Krivonogov and the inscription on the wall “I’m dying but I won’t surrender. Farewell, Motherland.” Self-sacrificing defense of the fortress and this inscription are historical facts. But there is also a shocking fact. The feat of defenders of the Brest Fortress could stay beyond the official Soviet history because almost all of those few defenders who happened to survive were captured by the Germans and Stalin clearly said: “There are no captives. There are traitors of the Motherland.” Only after the war Sergey Smirnov, a writer, the chief editor of the “Literary Newspaper”, managed to redeem good name of defenders of the Brest Fortress thanks to his publications. He began looking for the participants of the defense soon after Stalin’s death and found hundreds of people. Some of them were imprisoned, the others were in labour camps but all, without exception, lived in full obscurity and with a disgraceful brand of a betrayer. Most of them had not lived till recognition: they miraculously survived the hell of June 1941 and years of German concentration camps but fell victims of postwar repressions at home in the USSR. How could it happen that in June 1941 in spite of numerous evidences of the impending attack the garrison of the fortress was not ready to fighting and the Command from Moscow just repeated “not to rise to provocations”? Why the defenders of the Brest Fortress were beware of the local population perhaps even more than of the attacking fascists? How could a handful of soldiers without armament, ration, water and connection with the command continue to resist vehemently so long to the German military machine – artillery, tanks, aviation and attack planes of the elite Austrian divisions? Why did not they surrender? Did they still hope that our army was on the way? Or, like the Germans explained, did they think that in captivity they would be shot? Or maybe they wanted to revenge for their killed relatives and friends? All this is a part of the answer but there was also something else, thrice-told by propaganda and indeed something very personal. Something that made those people die but not surrender.

Catch and put into prison
The epoch of primary accumulation was ruthless in all countries. Therefore, the word combination “Five Years of Lawlessness” reflects most precisely those processes which started in the early 90-s. At some point, the Russian society was then ready to make up with the fact that the “criminal truth” is invincible.

Blowing-up Mercedeses and BMWs, pot shots and shots “for sure” demonstrated regularly by TV, corpses of plump men in expensive suits – all this became an integral part of every-day reality and even summaries of regular victims murdered by killers in this country should be given not in the criminal, but in the business or society chronicles.

Only the courage of militia officers who continue their battle with criminals in spite of everything allows the society to keep its humanistic potential and hope that the human life will at last be taken as a phenomenon incommensurable with any capitals.

A story about the most famous criminal cases, an analysis of historical and contemporary situation in the criminal world, interviews with acting officers of a MIA (Ministry of Internal Affairs) subdivision.

Chapaev must be assassinated
The film is devoted to a story of a life and death of the legendary commander of Red Army V.I.Chapaev. Circumstances of its death are not quite clear. On one of the versions Chapaev has sunk, crossing the river Ural. On another, mortally wounded he has died at a crossing and has been buried ashore. Doubtless it is possible to consider that fact that the legendary hero and the national leader became the victim of totalitarian system and was destroyed by hands of the White not without the aid of traitors of a military staff. Such person as Chapaev — independent, direct and uncompromising, simply could not be welcome to the military command and especially to Trotsky. Historians underline military talent of the commander, his ability to take control in a critical situation, authority among soldiers despite intolerance of Chapaev to sloppiness. His sincere kindness is also noted: Chapaev brought up both native and the children of the killed friend. Historians took part in the program: Boris Ajrapetjan, Andrey Burovsky, Andrey Ganin, Sergey Semanov, Sergey Balmasov; great-granddaughter of V.I.Chapaev Alla Chapaeva; great-great-granddaughter Vasilisa Chapaeva.

CHARLES DE GAULLE (CHARLES DE GAULLE. BACK TO POWER)
Charles de Gaulle was the President of France who took the lead of the country twice when it was deep in crisis and became its national hero, the symbol of patriotism and national dignity. According to the biographer of Charles de Gaulle, he was the President who "turned the course of history of France". The President, whose aim in life was the greatness of France. The film focuses mainly on such periods in the history of France as the First and the Second World Wars, the civil war in Algeria in 1954, student riots in France in the end of the 60-ies, and features the General's younger years. The best merits of General de Gaulle revealed themselves, undoubtedly, during the Second World War, when he called for resistance from London with courageous words "I was France". The purpose of the entire political course of Charles de Gaulle was to put national dignity over political manipulations and interests of certain social classes. De Gaulle never acknowledged the USA striving to become the governor of the "Western Camp" and contributed to establishing relationships with the USSR, which he deemed to be, in the intellectual sense, first of all, the cultural heritage of the former Russian Empire. The political wisdom of the President laid in rational balancing between the two states. The authors of the film draw a parallel between the international policy of de Gaulle and the efforts of the Russian government (statements of V.V. Putin, S. Lavrov), aimed at finding an independent policy of Russia. The film was produced with the assistance of: Jean Lacouture, biographer of Charles de Gaulle, Yuri Rubinsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Wolf Sedykh, President of Association of the friends of France, Vyacheslav Shilov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Evgeniya Obichkina, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor of the Moscow State University of Foreign Affairs, Anatoliy Utkin, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Georgy Zubkov, TV journalist and writer, Helene Carrere d'Encausse, President of the French Academy of Sciences, Yuri Dubinin, ambassador of the USSR to France in 1990-1991, Charlie Garbis Koubesserian, make-up designer of Charles de Gaulle.

Disturbances
A new public holiday, the Day of Accord and Reconciliation, will be celebrated for the first time this year. Indeed, Russia needs both accord and reconciliation. However, before reaching these, we should at least stop lying to ourselves and first of all stop lying about our common past.
After 1917, we were taken through the procedure of systematic obliteration. We were deprived of our own history, which was so much deformed that we should better know no history at all than the one that was conveyed to us – trimmed and fit for up-to-the-minute political interests.
The authors of the film do not claim to reveal a comprehensive history of those times. Most likely, this is impossible. They say, history is not science but art, collective art of the entire people. It is a kind of canvas on which each painter lays his brushstrokes. Our only purpose is to refresh some forgotten or faded with time colors in the eyes of viewers and relate the events which were painted over in the course of creation of the historical canvas or turned to look unreasonably minor as compared with other events and which now appear more important and considerable.

FDR: THE ASSOCIATE OF HISTORY
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, was the only President to hold the post for four successive terms, in violation of the country's tradition. In 1933, as he inherited the helm, he immediately chose the course of social reforms, which brought the country out of the economic depression. The core of his reforms was organization of social security system, support of trade unions and interests of the working class. His project of community activities allowed almost complete liquidation of unemployment. Not all representatives of business and capital approved Franklin Roosevelt's course of reforms, nevertheless, it was effective and returned to the American people the trust in their president and hope for better future of their country again. Roosevelt's policy during the Second World War and his idea of military support (lend-lease) significantly expanded production capacities and progressed America to become the superpower. The authors of the film draw a parallel between the events in America during the years of Roosevelt's presidency and the events in Russia in the 90-ies. The similar political course of both states, aimed at finding the way out of the economical crisis, namely, exploitation of state leverages and mechanisms of economical influence can be traced. Special emphasize is placed on the importance of the people's reliance in their President for successful implementation of economical and political reforms. The film was produced with the assistance of: historians Viktor Mal'kov, Anatoly Utkin, Christopher Miller, Vladimir Pechatnov, Nikolay Ilievsky, Yuri Rogulev, Yaroslav Listov.

Fight for the North
Paradoxically today the North is one of the “hottest” regions in the world. Repartition of the Arctic and its colossal resources excite Canada, the USA, Norway, Denmark and of course Russia. We have the most extensive plans for the “Arctic pie” and have been fighting for the top of the world longer than others after all. The fight for the North may seem to be just flaring up but actually it has already been running for many centuries. Its most interesting moments are included in Kirill Nabutov’s documentary project “Fight for the North”. Heroic epics of Sedov and Kolchak, the tragedy of the steamship “Chelyuskin”, well-known transpolar flights of Chkalov and Gromov, the first drifting station of Papanin, record-beating construction of Belomorkanal and horrors of the Solovki prison camp, the bloodiest battle of the twentieth century — the Great Patriotic War, the main USSR nuclear test site in Novaya Zemlya and the story of the most powerful nuclear explosion in the history of humanity… Fight for the North is the story of hundreds of thousands of ruined lives, hundreds of legends, vortex of international intrigues and mysticism. In this new documentary project NTV presents real heroes and evil geniuses, dispels a great number of myths about the real Arctic exploration. The audience will see unique shots from all parts of the Russian North: the Kola Peninsula and Chukotka, Kolyma and Solovki, Naryan-Mar and Vaygach Island — the most distant parts of our country, as well as the rarest video recordings that in their time were shown only to the Secretaries of the Central Committee because they were highly classified. For the first time a wide audience will have a chance to get acquainted with the documents that allow to review the history of our North

General lebed
One year ago, on April 28th, a MI-8 helicopter touched a power transmission line and crashed down. A few hours later, the heart of the brightest politician of the mid-nineties, Alexander Lebed, stopped beating. General Lebed lived just the way he spoke – brightly, boldly and briskly. He managed to stop bloodshed in Moldova’s Transdnestr region and singed the armistice with Chechens in 1996. Later, Boris Yeltsin’s “successors” smoothly removed Lebed from the inner circle of the powers-that-be. Whom did the general fight against in Krasnoyarsk and why did he drink coffee in a cage with tigers. The program includes unique footage featuring the man who, at the age of fifty, set a new objective -- “to reduce significantly the number of people who would use him as a weapon.”

The film is based on an exclusive interview with Adolph Hitler’s favorite film director, Leni Riefenstahl, who produced such movies as “Triumph of the Will,” “Olympia,” “The Valley.” At present, Ms. Riefenstahl is living in exile and does not give interviews to any media, even to German TV networks. She lives in a small village within seventeen kilometers of Munich. Nobody knows her home address, or her phone number. “Neither in Germany, nor in Russia, nobody knows anything about my private life,” says Leni. “Everybody is curious what sort of relationship I had with Adolph Hitler, whether I was his mistress.”NTV was seeking an interview with Leni Riefenstahl for more than a year. Several times, the interview was postponed because of Leni’s health problems. But eventually NTV obtained a right for the long-awaited interview which lasted more than three hours. Why didn’t Leni commit suicide after the WWII, like Herman Gering? Why none of Ms. Riefenstahl’s fourteen projects had been brought to life after the WWII? The Eiffel Tower, French wine, foie gras and, of course, the famous phrase “cherchez la femme” which perfectly conveys the romantic and mysterious spirit of this country. Indestructible union
In a new documentary of Alexey Pobortsev the participants of the historic meeting come to the Belovezhskaya Pushcha again and recollect the events that happened 15 years ago. Was the text of the document prepared beforehand? Why did not such an important meeting take place in a capital of some republic? The most unexpected details are revealed. How did the presidents relax, what did they eat and drink? The film also tries to answer the main question: why did the Union fall apart? Was it just the decision of the three presidents or were there any other, more serious reasons?
Many people remember 1991 as the very peak of the crisis, deepened in the Soviet Union. Lack of goods, people’s dissatisfaction, many republics do not want to be a part of the USSR any more. Efforts to suppress the protests by force embitter people. Everything goes downhill. Something must be done. A Union agreement is being prepared but the coup of August 19 changes everything. How was the coup prepared, did Gorbachev know about it and if he did, why did he go on holiday? Why was there no order to assault the White House? Recollections of direct participants of these events. GKCP (Emergency Situation State Committee) members and people from the other side of the barricades. How did the coup influence further events? Why did an attempt to save the USSR yield quite the opposite result? Everything is discussed in the second part of the documentary "Indestructible Union".

These criminal cases received much publicity all over the Soviet Union. Novels were written and films were shot on the basis of those cases. The persons involved in the cases were the millionaires of the era of socialism, witty thieves, professional robbers and “currency” swindlers. They challenged the Soviet society and the best investigators of the country met the challenge. They had no computers, cell phones or OMON fighters. However, this could not prevent justice. The gang the “Black Cat”, the case of the soviet gangsters of the late sixties, called “Fantomases”, the exciting story of the bandit Leonid Panteleev, the “free-lance artist, the thief” – all those cases made the history of Russian criminalistics.
The major aim of the series is not only to tell about the crimes and villains of the soviet times, but also to show the epoch, which has passed, in such way that the younger viewers could feel the atmosphere of the past and the older viewers could experience nostalgia for their younger years or childhood.
The anchor of the programme is the merited artist of Russia Leonid Kanevsky, the legendary Major Tomin from the popular series “Experts Investigate…”

Investments into revolution
It is an open secret that the revolution of 1917 succeeded due in large part to foreign financing. German financing is most known, which funds allegedly paid for all activities of Vladimir Lenin and his comrades. Lately, more is being said about millions of yens, paid by the Japanese General Staff for disturbing the situation in Russia on the eve of the Russian-Japanese war. As we remember, the war started in 1904, and less than in one year revolution broke out in Russia. Many researchers say that this revolution has served the reason for the great Russia losing the war to small Japan. The English are mentioned by far less, however, they are notorious puppeteers in the politic arena of the world and they only gained from the fact that the Russian empire, which has always been the geopolitical rival of England from the times of Peter the Great, has fallen. Many researchers adduce the arguments to support the fact that the English contributed to the revolutions in February and October 1917. The position of America in respect to the Russian revolutions is even less mentioned. However, it should be noted that the USA were the first to recognize the USSR and the first foreign businessman who started operations with the Soviet Russia on a large scale was an American. Famous Armand Hammer. Hammer and his brother Victor brought national valuables out of Russia in large volume. This was exactly how many of the most famous work-pieces of Faberge were moved abroad. Only Forbes collection possesses as many Easter eggs manufactured by "Faberge" as remain in all museums in Russia…

Khrushchev. The first after Stalin.
This is a biography of the Soviet leader who in fact ruled the country after Stalin’s death. Vladimir Chernyshev’s film is based on evidence of people who knew Khrushchev personally and the epoch related to his name. The film crew tried to recreate the way of ascension and subversion of the most contradictive First Secretary in the country’s history. From the streets of the mining town of Yuzovka-Donetsk to the top of the Kremlin and the dacha in Petrovo-Dalneye where the USSR leader was dying out after he was dismissed. So who was he? A provincial farmer from the village of Kalinovka once-for-all-time or a wise and tricky politician who played games with the planet on the edge of a nuclear war? A perpetual revolutionist and Trotskyite or a new Soviet patriot who created a nuclear shield of the empire? A certain Stalinist that debunked the myth about his idol? Or maybe he was a pragmatic politician who was ready to sacrifice his great predecessor for the sake of power? The father of “thaw” or the founder of “slush” that opened the way to dissolution and breakup of the USSR? The man that gave the Crimea away as a present to Ukraine and the leader that established the Berlin Wall. What did move him? And how can a young man in a tuxedo and a bow-tie on the picture of the pre-revolutionary Yuzovka relate to the funny fat man wearing a misfit suit of the Soviet chronicles? Even after several decades there is no any decisive answer to these questions. Khrushchev, a nice joker that charmed America, and Khrushchev, a tongue-tied glib talker, in a Ukrainian embroidered shirt. The execution by a firing squad in Novocherkassk, economic slump and food crisis, disparaging anecdotes about the Soviet power – all that is the epoch of Khrushchev. Nevertheless, Gagarin, Solzhenitzyn, Khrushchobys, poets in the stadiums and the missile parity also relate to the decade of Khrushchev. The black and white bust in the Novo-Dyevitchiye cemetery made by Ernst Neizvestny who was cursed by Khrushchev at an exhibition in Manezh is actually a symbol of a contradictive man who ruled the USSSR during ten years. Sergey, Nikita Khrushchev’s son, US President Eisenhower’s granddaughter, the billionaire Nelson Rockefeller’s nephew, the farmer Garst’s granddaughters who were fostered by President Khrushchev’s spouse during the visit, the son of Georgy Malenkov who was Khrushchev’s predecessor and rival, Anastas Mikoyan’s son and many other famous people share their reminiscences and experience with the audience. The film is about a man of the epoch which has been called after him. Nevertheless, he was more likely running after the epoch than leading it. Anyway, the film is about a man who left the country leader post and went to his dacha and not to a grave. It is a remarkable story of a boy from the village of Kalinovka who survived, won but lost.

The bodies of captain-lieutenant Dmitry Kozhevnikov and senior lieutenant Alexei Brazhin were raised to the surface on 20 October. Submarine Kursk reached its last mooring on 25 October 2001. Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev died 30 years ago, on November 10, 1982. He had ruled the country for 18 years. Yes, the old world that had been cursed and sneered many times crashed but nobody knew what the new one would be like… Brezhnev’s attendants and eye-witnesses of the events will tell about that period of time: his personal doctor Mikhail Kosarev, his guard Vladimir Medvedev, the permanent interpreter Viktor Sukhodrev as well as Mikhail Gorbachev and even the organizers of the large-scale Kremlin funerals whose names have not been known to the general public for a long time. Lenin. The Red Imperator
Lenin… This name was hackneyed so much in the Soviet times and later on during Perestroika that the personality cannot be seen clearly now. From deification to subversion, from a genius to a blighter – the extremes of judgments led away from the truth. In December 2013, more than twenty years on after the breakup of the USSR, the monument to Lenin was demolished in Kiev. Well, it seemed that the leader of the world’s proletariat had totally gone from the emotional intelligence of the former Union’s citizens – gone to anecdotes, myths, formal lines of textbooks, but still gone! In January, 2014 it will be ninety years from the death of the man who charted the country’s course almost for a century. The film of NTV’s observer Vladimir Chernyshev “Lenin. The Red Imperator” is an attempt to look at this figure without superfluous emotions pertaining to the beginning of the 90s. So, was he bad or good? Everyone can decide it personally. But he existed and there is no history without him, no XX century of our parents or XXI century of new generations. How came that a curly boy, an excellent pupil who came of a good family of a respectable civil servant of the empire turned to the principal revolutionary of human history? Why did the anti-regime protest become popular among the youth in the end of ÕIÕ century? What did these young men and women miss when they left their parents’ wealthy estates and went to throw bombs at the czar and the governors? And how it happened that the destroyer of the empire reconstructed and strengthened this empire after his rise to power? To answer these and other main questions, the film crew visited places connected with the important moments of Lenin’s life – from the wealthy house in Simbirsk (Ulyanovsk), through the countryside estate of Kokushkino and the small flat in Zurich where Vladimir Ilyich of 47 without any hopes of success for his ideas read the Russian newspapers dated February, 1917, to Petrograd, Moscow and the country-seat of Gorki where he was dying painfully.

Life for jeans
Everybody remembers their first jeans in this country – the same as you remember your first woman or the first man. In the USSR, jeans were called the clothes of the potential enemy. The first large-scale irruption of working pants of Western sons of toil at the Soviet Country happened in 1957. The World Youth Festival was the first time when the closed doors of the Soviet Union were opened. America and Europe, Africa and Asia – guests left in Moscow children of different races and the fashion for jeans. Jeans were fancied together with rock music, long hair and the word “kaif”. In course of time, a new word appeared in the USSR – a spiv. In 1960, speculators Rokotov and Faibyshenko were executed for currency operations. There is a legend that “jeans trading” was one of the counts and the last words of the defendant at the trial were: “Whatever you say, the best clothes are jeans!” In the West, jeans challenged bourgeois values and in the Soviet Union they challenged the socialist system. In the West, they were the symbol of rejection of the cult of money and here they became the symbol of wealth. Even if you are not rich, jeans served a pass into the overworld. This is the story of how we were defeated in the Cold war. According to the song, “we were taught to love your forbidden fruit, America”, and so we were caught.

Live legend
One can name a live legend many stars of cinema, music, politics and sport. But a well-known name is not a guarantee that it will be inscribed forever — not in history textbooks but in the collective memory. An impressive service record, a lot of figures and facts are not interesting by themselves if there is no charismatic personality behind. This personality will be the character of the legends.

Each programme focuses on an interview with the main character. But these films will not resemble jubilee eulogies. Nobody is perfect. Although, certainly, it is impossible not to love your hero. Or at least to respect and to acknowledge the talent.

These films will remind millions of people how they lived. These characters’ fates reflect our common past that we gradually forget. Since there is a grown up generation for whom Chubais is just a guy who is to blame if there is no light. And Mikhalkov is an ichthyosaurus. They have never heard about Kio as they do not go to the circus and they can hardly tell the difference between Magomaev and Kobzon. But since the TV undertook to be a chain, connecting generations, something that used to be called from mouth to mouth – it simply must tell this legend to those who do not know about it. Especially since this legend is still alive.

Living pushkin
‘Living Pushkin’ is the project prepared for the 200th anniversary since the poet’s birthday. It’s a documentary story about the poet’s life and the era that went down in history as “Pushkin’s era”.
Episode by episode, Pushkin’s life unfolds before our eyes as a true ‘encyclopedia of Russian life’: recollections of peasants alternate with excerpts from Pushkin’s letters; the narrator tells about the duel code, the work of secret police, the rules of exile, the drinking tradition and the drinks market, the Emperor’s Theatre and brides’ fairs…
The TV film does not just retell Pushkin’s biography known from school lessons, it also provides some facts that can rock the stereotypes connected with the life and work of the poet and depict his amazing life and the circumstances of his equally amazing death in the new light.

Love your motherland
Agitation of the first years of the Soviet power never used under-tones – the Evil represented by church and landowners fought against the Good represented by poor peasants and communists. Agitation trains and agitation ships and street performances were later replaced by sophisticated propaganda – false heroes, the Ministry of Truth, censorship and brain washing. With the era of wild capitalism brain washing continued, however it is now used under a different name. The last five years introduced the following concepts into our lives: focus-groups, public opinion polls, ratings, sales and promotion. These words do not exist in the Russian language yet but they are already widely used in PR. Eltsin’s election campaign in 1996 proved that it is possible to manipulate the opinions of the Russians as well as the opinions of other world nations. The president’s rating went down a month before the elections and it was then raised by Russian and foreign political technologists.

Modernism-era crimes
The genre of retro-style detective stories have become extremely popular over the last few years. Reasons for that are the viewers’ growing interest in that particular period (end of XIX century – beginning of the XX century) and growth of the general public’s interest in the history of their country. NTV offers a new series of retro-style detective novellas filmed in an non–traditional manner. In each novella, the investigation (from the moment a crime is committed till conviction of suspects) is based on factual data and real documents, not on script writers’ imagination.

Each novella of the “Modernism-era Crimes” series is a thorough reconstruction of the most notorious crimes of the beginning of the XX century. The series producers led by Lev Lurie, a well-known historian from St. Petersburg, portray the most notorious and evocative crimes which then-head of St Petersburg’s Police Dept. Vladimir Filippov had to investigate. A skillful combination of documentary footage, historical documents and theatrical reconstruction of the described events in each novella emerge as both an attention-grabbing detective story and an original excursus into the history of St. Petersburg.

The war which broke out in summer 1941 became a common disaster for all people. Already in autumn German forces approached Moscow. The main fascists’ aim was to capture the capital before frosts. The Soviet army failed to hold the defensive lines on distant approaches, in October fighting was 80 km from Moscow, early December the enemy was already 24 km from the city. A state of siege was proclaimed in Moscow and adjacent areas. The film plunges the audience into the atmosphere of the besieged capital. Moscow residents, who witnessed and were involved in those events, tell about the tensest months in their life – continuous bombing of the city, ration card system, severe hunger and endless queues, theatrical life of the city which continued despite the state of siege, the military parade on November 7, Stalin’s inspiring speech... For ones, he is a nonentity who disintegrated the great empire, while for others, he is the man who started the titanic way leading the country to the normal human life. Why do the Germans like him, and why are the people within the entire territory of the former Soviet Union skeptical about him? Why did the Soviet Union slip out of his hands all the same? Rzhev: Georgi Zhukov's Unknown Battle
In January 1942 — March 1943 on the so-called the Rzev-Sychevka salient, 150-200 km from Moscow (where Wehrmacht troops were pushed back to after the famous Red Army counter-offensive of 1941) there was launched one of the biggest battle. During four large-scale offensive operations Soviet forces tried to eliminate the salient, aimed at the capital, and to encircle the 9th Army of Group Centre. In total, fierce battles on this rather small area lasted for 13 months but failed to reach the desired objectives of the operation as the Rzev salient was not liquidated. In March 1943 German troops were ordered to withdraw from the salient to shorten their front line, preparing for summer offensive near Kursk. According to the historians, the losses suffered during Rzev battles were probably the hugest in World War II. The losses suffered by the Red Army are estimated as equal to one million people while the total death toll is about two millions. Rzhev and neighboring towns were completely ruined. War’s consequences can be observed till now. The main positive result of the battles was that German troops could not send any unit located near Rzhev to the South, to take part in the Battle of Stalingrad. After war Rzhev battles were mentioned seldom and reluctantly. The operations were called “separate”, “unfinished”, “diversionary” and “tactical”. And though after the year of 1991 the situation changed and many detailed researches have been written about Rzhev battles, we must confess that comparing to the Battle of Moscow or the Battle of Stalingrad, Rzev battles are still not well-known to the public. Many people are aware that it was a battlefield only thanks to Tvardovsky’s poem “I was killed near Rzhev”. This film will tell you about the events of these days with the help of modern TV and cinema devices.

Salam, america!
America lost the war in the twentieth century: the war against the Vietnam communism. Then, there were two fronts: some kids died for the Stars & Stripes in the distant jungles, but in their own streets other kids of the same age burnt it. America did not withstand such civil opposition.
After the 11-th of September, America has declared war against radical Islam and is already fighting at two fronts: against radicals in the streets of Iraqi cities and against visiting terrorists at home, in America. But, its own Islam is growing, strengthening and maturing at home. The film “Salam, America” is about the Americans who adopted Islam not long before or just after the 11-th of September. Why did they decide to convert to the new belief? How do they live in America which is fighting against Muslims? Have they become strangers among their compatriots? Sentenced to live
About 200 Russians are sentenced to life imprisonment annually. The film producers visited several Russian penitentiaries where inmates sentenced to life imprisonment serve their sentences, including Russia’s biggest life-imprisonment penitentiary “Black Dolphin.” The first impression is a shock. Advocates of capital punishment should first gain an understanding of what “life imprisonment” really means, of what are the conditions in which murderers, cannibals, violators and terrorists have to live in. The film also features Salman Raduyev, one of Russia’s most ill-famed terrorist and tells how inmates received him in the prison. Peter the Great’s daughter, tsarina Elizabeth, was one of the first who tried to introduce a ban on capital punishment in Europe. Yet, it is unclear whether modern Russia is ready not only to extend a moratorium on death penalty but to abolish capital punishment once and for all.

Siege of leningrad (faces of the siege)
The film is timed to the anniversary of lifting the siege of Leningrad.
New documents in the authors’ disposal allow to answer many arguable questions about the siege of Leningrad. Discussions have been held recently speculating if Hitler wanted to assault Leningrad or not. Having analyzed tens of archive papers and research works, we can make a clear conclusion: it’s not the that he just wanted it – he dreamed of it! In the beginning of the war, it was Leningrad but not Moscow, that was his troops’ main target. The authors of the film obtain the unchallengeable documents proving this version.
What plans did the Finnish Marshal Mannerheim have? What is the role of Finland in the siege of Leningrad? The memoirs of Finnish war veterans, historians, the chronicles so far unknown in Russia showing that there were almost no active military actions in the Soviet-Finnish Front, and Finnish soldiers were busy mostly with agriculture. The Nazi who occupied the surroundings of Leningrad – who were they? There will be shown interviews of the veterans of the fight for Leningrad who were on the opposite side. There is no unity among them. Some of them ask the citizens of Leningrad for forgiveness and are aware of the criminal nature of the siege – they are the majority. However, there are those who still believe their actions were right.
The German chronicles illustrating the attitude of Germany towards the Soviet Union in the beginning of the war. The propaganda shows the Soviet captives. The text behind the screen is approximately as follows: “Churchill and Roosevelt! Look at the faces of the people you help! These are Bolshevik hordes. They should be eliminated. They are not worth calling them humans…”.
The German chronicles show good nutritious feeding of German soldiers in the distance of several kilometers from the city where people go mad of hunger.
Memoirs of those who survived the siege. A school girl who starved in Leningrad, the future merited actor of Russia, Alisa Freundlich. Merited actor Nikolai Trofimov recalls how he lost his three-month-old son and looked for the place where he could bury the boy and how he helped to dismantle the remains of a tram filled with people after a German shell had hit it.
Regular citizens of Leningrad recall their past. An explosion torn off a little girl’s arm and she cried…because the bread card was left in it. After winter, saunas were open. People washed themselves together in one room and laughed at each other to tears: people were emaciated to the limit.

Socialism era warriors
Seventies are generally known as the years of stagnant stability in the USSR. At that time, the word “gang” could be encountered only detective stories and feature films. What’s more, the last criminal case opened in the USSR under the clause “Gangsterism” was closed in mid-fifties. However, dozens of gangs committed various crimes throughout the country. Yet, all the information about these gangs was classified as it might have spoilt the police records, and, thus, the majority of criminal cases did not reach the court.
But what happened in Kazan, capital city of the Tatar Republic, could not be hushed up at all. Teenager gangs that emerged in one of Kazan’s districts were formed like army units. A commander, a chief of staff, commanders of smaller units were at the helm of gangs. This was how there was born an alternative to the official groups of Russian teenagers -- Pioneers and Young Communist Leaguers. The entire city were afraid of the guys from that district. In 1978, the gang decided to fill the city with terror, the terror that nobody had ever heard of. It was for the first time in the last thirty years, the word “Gangsterism” popped up in the history of the Soviet law.
As a result of the police raid, over 80 members of the gangs were put in the dock. Local police officers narrowly escaped dismissal, while the local executive authorities were still trying to hush up the fact of existence of teenager gangs. Yet, they failed to do so, as too much blood was shed by diligent schoolchildren and technical school trainees.
The program includes interviews with police officers and prosecutors of the republic of Tatarstan who took part in the investigation of this case.

Stalin versus the Red Army
On June 11, 1937 a special tribunal consisted of six high-ranking military commanders sentenced Mikhail Tukhachevsky, Marshall of the Soviet Union, and a “group of traitors” to death on the charge of conspiracy. The execution of some leaders of the Red Army is known as the Military Case (the case of “Anti-Soviet Military Organization”). On June 12, 1937 the newspaper Izvestia published the following: “The spies Tukhachevsky, Yakir, Uborevich, Kork, Eideman, Feldman, Primakov and Putna sold out to the deadly enemies of Socialism and dared to raise their blooded hands against the life and happiness of one hundred and seventy million people, the people that had created the “Stalin Constitution” and built a society free of ruling classes…”. Stalinist repressions are often called the main reason of terrible disasters of the first year of the Great Patriotic War. Why did Stalin destroy chief military officers of the Red Army while Hitler was feverishly making preparations for war? Why were the best officers of the Red Army presented as a gang of traitors and spies? One of the greatest paradoxes of Soviet history is that knowing that a war could break out at any moment, Stalin killed the best military commanders and strategists. Why were these people killed? If Stalin had failed to destroy all officers on the eve of the war, might the war have never started? In any case the war would have been different and would not have caused death to so many people…

Stalin. death of the leader
The last word the Soviet leader uttered was “God.” There was an Orthodox Christian icon and a wine horn hanging over Josef Stalin’s deathbed. This is not a legend, this is a documentary evidence. What did Stalin think about death? Why did he carefully avoid attending funerals? Who or what promoted concessions to the Russian Orthodox Church during WWII? According to professor Alexander Kolesnik, the span from late forties through early fifties represents a special period of development of the Soviet government system. In fact, the span is a new phase in the creeping war of clans. What’s more, Stalin does not take an active part in this war, since he is seriously ill. A new redistribution of powers starts within the Soviet government circles. This is clash of the so-called “old families” and the fresh blood represented by new officials who gained fame and respect during WWII. Time will pass, and long after Stalin’s death, this “fresh blood,” which first popped during the Soviet Union’s first redistribution of powers (including Brezhnev, Ustinov, Suslov), will take over the helm. In fact, the will reign the country till 1991. The film includes interviews with A. Kolesnik, R. Kosolapov, N. Baibakov, S. Khrushchev, E. Dzhugashvili, G. Moroz, Y. Kvitsinsky, S. Tikhvinsky, A. Sudoplatov, L. Ivashov.

Stalingrad - 1942. last christmas
Six decades have passed since the last shots of the bloodiest and lengthiest battle of World War II were fired. The fierce fighting on both banks of the Volga river lasted for two hundred and twenty days and nights. Here, not far from Stalingrad, a whole German army was encircled and ultimately torn to shreds. Priest Kurt Reuber, also a philosopher and painter, was among those 300,000 German soldiers and officers encircled by the Red Army near Stalingrad. On Christmas Eve of 1942, he painted the Mother of God with the infant in her hands on the backside a school map. That painting became a hope of survival for the encircled German forces. The film portrays the history of the painting titled “Madonna of Stalingrad,” which is now exhibited at one of Germany’s Protestant cathedrals. The film includes interviews with Uta Tolklit, daughter of Kurt Reuber, pastor Zoppe, Russian veterans Maria Danina and Anatoly Merezhko, and German veterans of the battle of Stalingrad.

However, there was one majour thing they lacked in this comfortable life — serving their Motherland. Krivosheins, a family of White emigrants wanted to be helpful to the country that they were forced to leave some time ago. It’s clear why people left Russia, but not as clear why they returned. Missing Russian birch-trees? A common homesickness metaphor does not explain much. Zinenko’s documentary is an attempt to understand the motivation for returning to Motherland in various periods of history, from 1945 to nowadays. Five stories lie in the centre of the documentary narration, five heroes with very different fates. What can be in common between a grandson of Tsar’s minister, the daughter of the first Soviet defectors, a Russian girl – war captive, a Cossack from Istanbul and finally, an ordinary officer of a juvenile prison in the town of Birobijan? Summer residents (dachniki)
What do the great writers, artists, scientists, painters, politicians and sportsmen have in common? What connects simple, “not great” people with them and with each other? The fact that all these people sooner or later became summer residents. In the summer cottages, they made scientific discoveries and carried on giddy love affairs, created great works of art and informed against their neighbors, demonstrated their loyalty to political regime and made jam, brought up children and hid themselves from the political regime.

In the programme “Summer Residents”, history “meets” contemporaneity under “informal circumstances”, and details of everyday life and funny and pathetic, absurd and dramatic details of private life make up the inimitable colour of the programme.

The television project “Summer Residents” exists for nearly four years. During this time, more then fifty original programmes were shot about various summer residence localities in Russia and near Moscow, such as: Peredelkino and Mozzhinka, Malakhovka and Koktebel, Tarusa and Nicolina Gora, Ruza and Serebryanny Bor, Peter’s Komarovo, and Rublevka.

Tsvetaeva and Eisenstein, Pasternak and Galich, Stalin and Khruschev, Rostropovich and Sakharov, Lilya Brik and Ilya Erenburg, Sergei Korolev and Otto Shmidt, Leonid Utesov, Dmitrii Shostakovich, Nikolai Cherkasov, Alexander Vertinsky and many others were the heroes of the programmes. However, now the fact that interesting topics are not depleted inspires the authors of the project.

The scope of the programme “Summer Residents” actually expands: besides the localities near Moscow, with still plenty of “untrod paths”, the programmes were shot in Livadia and Odessa, programmes are being shot about distinguished summer residence localities in the Crimea and in the Baltic area. A new theme about Russian summer residents abroad is being developed now.

The Programme has a wide audience. Someone recognizes that “Summer Residents” is a sort of Mexican soap opera, a story about human passions, someone is interested in the fate of particular heroes who became the milestones in the Russian history and culture, the thirds are attracted by the nostalgia for specific time and place… All these three views on the Programme are relevant: the author’s project of Masha Shakhova supposes both television taginess and lyric spirits and, also, a thorough analysis of the historic and cultural context.

In 2002, the programme “Summer Residents” was awarded “TEFI” television prize.

The abduction of fire
For decades, the creation of the nuclear bomb in our country has been believed to be the result of titanic efforts undertaken by the Soviet scientists and entire people. In the West, quite the opposite, they have always said that the secrets of the most devastating weapon of the 20th century had been stolen by the Soviet spies. It was in the late 80-s only, that in the Soviet Union they started to talk about the contribution by the foreign scientists and the role of the Soviet intelligence in the liquidation of the US nuclear monopoly. But those who used to attribute somebody else’s credits to themselves, were yet too influential for the truth to prevail. Nowadays, half a century after the testing of the first Soviet nuclear bomb, one may try to have everything graded properly.
For one and a half years the NTV crew collected materials on Klaus Fuchs, the main supplier of nuclear secrets to the Soviet scientists. A German Communist and a British citizen, one of the leading theorists of the nuclear physics, he has always rightfully been named among the creators of the American and English nuclear bomb. But Fuchs can also claim being the father of the Soviet nuclear weapons. Such a claim is evidenced not only by the statements of some Soviet scientists and secret documents of the foreign intelligence which are now open. In the documentary, Vladimir Barkovsky and Leonid Kvasnikov, officers of the scientific and technical intelligence, the legendary Ursula Kuchinsky (Ruth Verner) who was the courier for Fuchs in Englad in the early years of the war, and Alexander Feklisov, intelligence colonel visiting the places of his secret meetings in London, recollect their work with Fuchs and the nature of the materials he supplied.
Presenter Eugeny Kiselev narrates about the key events in the life of Klaus Fuchs and about the creation of the nuclear weapons, in Blenheim, the ethel of Churchill, where Fuchs used to pass the materials to Ursula Kuchinsky; in New York, the center of the nuclear secrets collection during the war; in the Los-Alamos laboratories which up to now have been the major nuclear research place in the US; in Santa-Fe where Fuchs delivered the main materials on the US nuclear bomb; in the White Sands, the first nuclear weapons proof ground which even nowadays is a secret military installation; in a London courtroom where Fuchs was sentenced to 14 years in jail after having been exposed; in the prison from which Fuchs was released almost ten years later; and in the German nuclear center Rossendorf where Fuchs was the main theorist almost until his death in 1988.
In the intelligence community, Klaus Fuchs is unique, because he always acted in line with his personal beliefs only, did not seek any remuneration and did not take risks into account. He was the real Puritan of spying, may be, to a greater degree than other foreign idealist agents who collaborated with the Soviet intelligence. He had been brought up in a strict morale in a family of an eminent Lutheran priest. Even collaborating with a foreign intelligence service, he remained true to himself. The sister of Klaus Fuchs Chrystel who lives in the US, his nephew Klaus Fuchs-Kittovsky, his secretary Hirte Zanden, Marcus Wolf, the head of the foreign intelligence of East Germany, writer Daniil Granin and Academician Eugeny Velikhov all tell about the character of Klaus Fuchs. They also tell that the USSR completely ignored Fuchs after he was released and never thanked the man who risked his life for that country.
Still, and the intelligence officers do recognize that, one can not say that the Soviet nuclear bomb was created exclusively due to the activities of Klaus Fuchs. Thanks to the testimonies by physicists Nikolay Dollezhalya, Eugeny Velikhov, Igor Golovin and Sergey Gueguechkory, the son of L.Beria, shown in the documentary, some out-of-the-way episodes of the Soviet nuclear program which was supervised by Lavrenty Beria, are displayed.
The shooting took place in Russia, Germany, England and the US, it was first broadcast on the 80th anniversary of the Soviet foreign intelligence (December 20, 1920).

The afghan trap
Today it seems that everything is known about the Afghan war.
That in 1979 the Soviet invasion of the Southern neighbor’s territory was the first and the only one. That the decision to bring in troops was not thought out well and was taken too hastily by several mentally weak Kremlin rulers.
That the Soviet Army did not fight well and was doomed to lose in Afghanistan.
It’s all wrong.
It’s all not quite simple.
The two-episode documentary film “The Afghan Trap” of the “Contemporary History” series raises a lot of difficult questions.
What was happening in the friendly Afghanistan in early 70s? Why did the Politbureau, which initially had been unanimous in rejecting the idea of armed intervention, finally decide to go ahead? How did Soviet troops get involved in military action and when did our troops learn to fight? Why couldn’t politicians and diplomats achieve political settlement for such a long time? What was the outcome of the Afghan war, and has it ended at all? For the first time the history of Soviet invasion will be presented from various points of view, through the eyes of all the sides involved in the conflict. Soviet leaders, military chiefs, diplomats, advisors, secret service officers, soldiers and officers will all tell their truths...
Afghans who occupied high posts after the victory of the April revolution and fought on the side of the Communist regime...
Leaders and fighters of the armed opposition – those who were first called bandits, Dushmans and then Modjaheds, defenders of faith...
The narrator, Evgeni Kiselyov, who worked as a military interpreter, and the film team will show how the USSR became gradually involved in the internal conflict of the neighboring country and ended up trapped in the “Afghan trap”. And how difficult it was to escape from that trap.

The andropov
Yuri Andropov ruled the country for only 15 months. Before that, for 15 years he had been heading the agency which many came to fear and despise – the KGB. And still, the recent poll shows that Andropov is recognized as the most popular Soviet leader.
Who was that man which despite the drastic changes is still interesting to the Russian public? A fan of jazz, American mystery books and whiskey? A patron of arts as he was presented by the KGB propaganda machine? A maverick in the Central Committee of the CPSU, an intellectual and a poet as he remained in the memories of his employees? Or a suppressor of the 1956 Budapest uprising, a persecutor of dissidents and an inventor of punitive psychiatry as he has recently been described?
In order to answer those questions the shooting crew interviewed many famous people who knew Andropov very well. His advisors Aleksandr Bovin, Fyodor Burlatski, Oleg Bogomolov, Georgy Arbatov, his colleagues Eduard Shevardnadze, Arkady Volsky, Leonid Zamyatin, Nikolai Yegorychev, Yegor Ligachov, the chief of foreign intelligence of the GDR Markus Wolf, Andropov’s subordinates Vladimir Kryuchkov, Oleg Kalugin, Anatoly Lukyanov, human rights activists Vladimir Bukovsky, Nathan Shcharansky, Vyacheslav Bakhmin, Aleksandr Daniel, theatre director Yuri Lyubimov, historian Roy Medvedyev share their memories with the viewers. Direct participants of the 1956 Hungarian events help determine the role and responsibilities of the Soviet ambassador in the suppression of the popular uprising. For the first time we learn some facts from the private life of Yuri Andropov: the viewers will see Yevgenia, his daughter from the first marriage, and learn the dramatic story of his son Vladimir who died early.

The congress of losers?
“The Congress of Losers?” of the “Contemporary History” series is devoted to the 10th anniversary of the first Congress of People’s Deputies of the USSR.
This film is about the beginning of an end. It is about the crumbling of the empire called the Soviet Union. In May 1989, all the country was glued to TV screens and radios: everyone followed the Congress of People’s Deputies. The Communists’ dream came true: at that time the people and the party were almost one.
“We” hoped that “they” knew where to go from there, and they didn’t know how to agree with each other. We thought that the country took a free breath for the first time, and it turned out that is was the last breath. We thought we were moving away from the abyss, but in reality…
Some came to the Congress in order to build “the socialism with a human face”, the others came to destroy it, and still others didn’t want any change at all.
Together, we failed to build a new Tower of Babel…
The film features: Yuri Afanasyev, Nikolai Travkin, Anatoly Lukyanov, Nikolai Ryzhkov, Mikhail Gorbachov, Eduard Shevardnadze and other deputies of the first Congress.

“The First First Lady” is a film of the “Contemporary History” series devoted to Raisa Maksimovna Gorbachova, the wife of the President of the USSR.
It is a film about a woman who was disliked by nearly the whole country but was not only able to overcome the public dislike but also managed to spark respect in those who recently almost cursed her.
She was disliked for always staying beside her husband, but the Gorbachovs just couldn’t live the other way – they always stayed together. She was reproached for buying expensive clothing while in reality she bought clothes tailored by her formed neighbor in Stavropol. There were lots of rumors and gossip about her, and it was difficult to see the truth through them. The truth was that she just loved her husband and was ready to share all his “grief and joy”. The forgotten regiment
“The Forgotten Regiment” is a program about the missing in action and those who still cherish the hope of finding them.
Yevgeny Kirichenko, a war journalist NTV, presents the program.
As long as the soldier remains at duty, the state needs him. But once he is registered as missing in action, the state, most often than not, ignores him. If we count all the missing in action in the local conflicts of the last few years, we could put together more than one regiment. The names of the missing in action are crossed out of the lists of their detachments, but they are not crossed out of the memories of their families who have spent years trying to find at least the grave of their son, brother or father. The program's goal is to make this search more efficient using the opportunities offered by TV.
The program covers lives of concrete soldiers and officers who did not come back from war. Their mothers and companions in arms, as well as the people, who try to find them, speak about them.
The program tells about those who performed their "international duty" in Afghanistan and Korea, Vietnam and Angola, Mozambique and South Yemen. Information about many officers missing in action at those wars remains secret.
The idea is that each program should yield a result, showing a mother meeting with her son who has been rescued from the Chehen captivity or children learning the whereabouts of the grave of their father missing in action since the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

The Great War
100 years ago the European empires started the most terrible war in the history. It was a fight in which giants were destroying each other. Started within Europe it turned out to the world war soon involving new participants in its deathful circle. The Russian borders were shifted by six hundred kilometers eastward, Germany moved to the west, Austro-Hungary dissipated. Rich and prosperous Europe was plunged into poverty by the war. Hunger led to a revolution just one country, grain Russia. Instead of the Russian Empire something unprecedented emerged – a state of workers and peasants that had swore to finish with the old world… The ambitious docudrama “The Great War” with participation of the outstanding actor Vladimir Gostyukhin as an anchorman and narrator is an attempt to accurately and scrupulously study out the reasons, course and progress as well as consequences of the First World War in the human history. On June 28, 1914 the Serbs killed the Austrian successor and, thus, Germany made an attack on France. In one month Europe was on fire. Today such explanation to the start of the war sounds as absurd as a hundred years ago, nevertheless it happened… Were there real suppositions of what happened and was it possible to avoid the war if the successor to the Austro-Hungary throne Franz Ferdinand didn’t go to rebellious Bosnia? How could the related monarchs – the Russian tsar Nikolai, the German imperator Wilhelm and the English king Georg were cousins – cause such unprecedented bloodshed? Who did actually push Nikolai to enter the war that was fatal for him? The authors of the project will recreate the detailed chronicle by historical reconstructions using the 3D photo animation technology, unique photos and video frames representing, for example, the last moments of life of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and rare documentary records — the memoirs of sovereigns, military commanders, diplomatic officials, participants in military operations. 1914 exactly showed that a man is nothing versus a machine. Such huge armies have never fought yet before and they have never been so helpless before weapons – machine guns, armors, aircrafts, submarines, chemical gases. The viewers will see Verdun, the longest and hardest battle in the history, the bloody armor combat near Somme, the unprecedented Brusilov Offensive and other important events of the First World War after which it became clear that the world would never be the same again.

The Kremlin children
This documentary series is a logical continuation of the movie "The Kremlin wives", which has recently been successfully broadcast on the NTV Channel. This time the authors' aim are not the women who became the choice of the Kremlin bonzes, but the children who were born in the Kremlin families, their fates. It's considered that nature relaxes on children. Is it really so? Whom have the young people from the most successful families turned into? Those who had nothing impossible on their ways, those who had wonderful opportunities... Were they really happy or has theit celebrity status ruined their lives? And what happened if their parents (mainly fathers of course) were removed from their positions? In Stalin times this could easly lead to GULAG for the eldest and to kindergarten for the youngers, who often lost not only their parents but the possibility to retain theit own surnames. While Khruschev and Brezhnev were in power children stopped to be punished for their fathers' sins, but the change of their ways of living could appear to become even more terrifying for their minds than prison... The authors would like not only tell us about the fates of the children from the most famous Kremlin families, but try to learn what could really influence the formation of their minds — no matter where those children got their education — at elite Moscow schools, which appeared when Stalin was in power or at special children's homes for the enemies of the state's children.

The Kremlin funerals
Lives of the Soviet leaders have been surrounded by set of legends. But not only lives … Almost all representatives of the Soviet aristocracy have died so that historians argue till now, trying to understand the reasons of death natural, at first sight, and to separate propagation and conjectures from the facts. With death of the next Kremlin master against official obituaries and a demonstrative national grief hearings and gossips were multiplied, there were improbable versions, some of which as show the declassified archives, have not been deprived the bases. Who has poisoned Lenin and whether he has been poisoned in general? To whom was murder of Kirov favourable? Why after death Dzerzhinsky persevering hearings went, what the death of "the knight of revolution» was violent? Business of doctors-murderers — a tragical farce or result of a real negligence and medical errors? Why leaders began to be buried near the Kremlin wall, and later — in her and who had the right to appear on the most elite cemetery of Soviet Union? Answers to this and many other questions are in the new documentary cycle constructed on a material of declassified archival documents and results of set of expert judgements.

The kremlin wives
Private life of the high and mighties has always aroused especial interest in citizens. People have always wondered what one or another leader eats, where he sleeps and how he spends his free time. In this aspect, the Soviet epoch is particularly interesting. In the first place due to the top secrecy of the private life of party leaders.
Whom did Lenin and Stalin, Voroshilov and Mikoyan choose as their better halves? How did the position of the leaders affect their intimate relations? What strengthened the relations in Kremlin families – traditional values or new principles of Bolsheviks? How were the relations in a family – the smallest social unit – interrelated with state activity of the leaders? How did personal qualities of leaders and their wives affect family life?
Answers to these and many other questions will be given in the documentary series “The Kremlin Wives”.

The main hero
February 4, 2007 NTV gets personal. “The Main Hero” is a weekly reporters’ programme about personalities and the personal. Its heroes (which for the most part are in good health in this world now) frankly speak about their very personal matters. The participants of major events of our time, the people whose names are known to everyone, first-rate politicians, businessmen, brightest movie and show business stars tell about the secrets of their lives themselves.

When arranging the studio for the programme, the journalists fooled around a little and destroyed the customary image of a studio as a “secluded Ostankino bunker” with talking heads. Amidst the modern multimedia set, there is a hole through which Anton Khrekov goes out into the world. Several cranes and concert light are used on the set. In fact, the heroes of the programme will be able to carry out concerts right in the studio. A special stage was arranged for this purpose. It is known that the programme will contain the “Great Musical Adventure” — a regular report of Vadim Takmenev, the reporter of the “Profession: Reporter” programme. The authors of the programme define its genre as the report & concert. Each time it will be an original first-time performance with participation of celebrities.

“The Main Hero. Unknown about the Well-Known” represents facts, witnesses, authentic documents, unique amateur video records and photos.

“The Main Hero. NTV gets personal” includes reports where the stories are usually narrated from the first person. The heroes confide in the reporters of the programme and trust its viewers. Exclusive interviews with those in the limelight. Heroes of rumor mill. Incredible turns of fates and then unknown facts.

The gem of the programme is the deciphered biography of a legendary person or reconstruction of a breathtaking event recited by its famous participants. Rare photos of historical significance from private archives, which “revive” on the screen after computer reconstruction. And, of course, intriguing interviews right from the spot.

The olympic mysteries of russia
The film is dedicated to the World Olympic Movement and the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980. A lot of news and video reels as well as the extracts from the newspapers of the 19th and 20th centuries which give the real idea of the development of sport activities around the world are shown in the film.

The film starts with the symbolic scenes of the Russian Tsar Nikolay II and the first Russian President Boris Eltsin playing tennis. One hundred years separate the events and during these years sport transformed from "a clean pretty occupation for decent people into a huge business and politics" which usually contain a lot of mysteries, that are revealed in the film. The author takes the audience along the labyrinths of "the cold war" debunking the hypocritical slogan of the past : "Sport is out of politics".

How did it all start? The World Olympic movement was born in Athens in 1896 where the first Olympic Games took place. Then Stockholm, Berlin: winter and summer Games. The stronger and more influential the state was, the more possibilities it had to be chosen as a place for Olympic Games. Every state understood it. Hitler in 1936 made all the possible to have that unforgettable event in his country. Due to external and internal obstacles Russia was excluded from the International Olympic Committee and up till 1952 it did not participated in the Games and in all the ways opposed "the bourgeois Olympic Games" by their own Olympic Games known as "Spartakiads".

What steps did the states and sportsmen undertake to win in that battle? What else did Russia do to undermine the World Olympic Movement? And why did Russia in the long run decide to join the International Olympic Committee? How was Moscow chosen to be the place for the 1980 Olympic Games and who boycotted the Moscow Games due to the invasion of Soviet troops to Afghanistan? Answers to these and many other questions, strengthened by the episodes from the chronicles and interviews of eye-witnesses, you will find in this film.

Nevertheless, despite of its political colouring, Olympic Games represent the greatest sport festivity all over the world : competitions, performances and celebrations that is the atmosphere that reigns among the ordinary people.

The other day
The Other Day program maintains a different, quite uncharacteristic approach to the news programming. Program authors abandoned the traditional format of the Russian news broadcast, i.e. politics, business news, cultural events, sports updates and weather forecast, and instead decided to cover everything that might be interesting to the audience – haute couture news may follow reports from Russia’s remote regions, or reports from the world’s troublespots may follow episodes describing life in Hollywood. To a certain extent, Leonid Parfenov has already tested such method of presenting information in his previous project called The Other Day. Anno Domini. Besides program content, the format has been changed as well. A high pace of presenting information, extensive video reports that greatly contribute to the author’s comments.

The place of rendezvous, 20 years after
Film “The Place of Rendezvous, 20 Years After” tells not only how the cult film “The Place of Rendezvous Cannot Be Changed” was made but also about the times it described. About the life of the Moscow Criminal Investigations Department and about “thieves-in-law”, luxurious restaurants and flea markets – about the life after the Victory.
Practically each character in the film had its prototype. Some of them are widely known, others will become known to viewers for the first time (for instance, pick-pocket Brick, whom audience liked, had a prototype, a lisping thief nicknamed “Louse”).
A lot of things from the script were not included in the final version of the film – the “humane” censorship could not allow that, for instance, Sharapov’s girlfriend Varya be killed.
Arkady Vainer, one of the script writers, Stanislav Govorukhin, Armen Djigarkhanian, Ivan Bortnik, Vladimir Konkin, Larisa Udovichenko, Aleksnader Belyavsky, Vsevolod Abdulov will share their impressions.
Old police officers will describe the work of the criminal police of that time. But apart from cops and thieves there had been another life which is also shown in the film – there was a different fashion then (fashion designer Irina Andreeva remembers), and another type of audience attended the Bolshoi Theater (tells Bolshoi Theater administrator).
It’s not a nostalgia for the past years. Today’s Zheglovs and Sharapovs are fighting today’s Foxes and Bricks. The dispute on law and order still continue between them.

The plot at manege
The end of 1962. In the center of Moscow, there opened an exhibition dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Union of Artists. For the first time in the Soviet history, USSR’s powers-that-be, intelligentsia and young avant-garde artists met at one place. The purpose of that meeting was to establish contacts and mutual understanding between the three groupings. However, that exhibition turned out to be a failure and humiliation for the artists, while the authorities were infuriated. Nikita Khrushchev realized that the nation “had gone too far” and that it was time to turn the screws on intelligentsia. Those events at Moscow’s Manege had a worldwide response. From that exhibition, the humiliated painters earned a reputation for themselves. Then, the reign in the country changed. Almost forty years have passed since then, but the roots of that conflict are not clear yet. Opinions of the participants of those events still differ. Artists Boris Zhutovsky and Vladimir Preobrazhensky are convinced that the exhibition was just a link in the plot against Khrushchev. Political scientist Alexander Bovin and head of the Moscow City Committee of the USSR Communist Party Nikolay Yegorychev lay the blame on Khrushchev’s unpredictable and uncontrollable temper, while the others, including Khrushchev’s daughter Rada Adjubei and Director of the Moscow Union of Artists say that crackdown was the result of the conflict within the USSR’s Union of Artists itself. The program’s objective is to compare the existing opinions regarding that conflict, to find out the true reasons of those events and, also, to find out who was the director of that grandiose performance. The program includes interviews with Nikolay Yegorychev, Rada Adjubei, poet Andrey Voznesensky, artists Belyutin, Nikonov and Rabichev.

The president of all russia
A lot of truthful and unfair things have been said about Yeltsin. For some people he was an idol, for others – a turncoat and a populist. Then many of his supporters turned into his enemies and many of his execrators – into his obsequious allies. All of them, Communists and democrats, reformists and conservators, tried to use the energy and strength of this man who had been nicknamed “Bulldozer” during his tenure in the Sverdlovsk region. But few tried to understand Boris Nikolayevich’s own intentions.
What kind of man was the first President of Russia? How did his character shape? Who were his friends and enemies during his life? And how should one view his decade: as the return of the eternal Russia to well-trodden paths of the mankind or as the destruction of its greatness and historical role?
For the first time, the NTV team tried, without haste or bias, to sort out Yeltsin’s personality and his role on the sharp turn of the Russian history. In five one-hour episodes, his relatives and friends, his associates and colleagues, his allies and enemies describe the man, his actions in critical situations, and how the decisions were taken which shaped the country’s future.
This film is both the biography of an extraordinary statesman and the history of the Russia’s recent turbulent decade.
Besides the official chronicle, the film uses unique agency and amateur footage as well as testimony of those who have always shied publicity.

The Romanovs. The last one hundred years
The last century of the House of Romanov. It started in the pattern year of 1913 but just five years later the dynasty fell down. What was the reason of the downfall? The private life of monarchs, intrigues and big-time politics, the heavy world war or the XX century itself with its new technologies and new customs that knocked down the ancient traditions of the Russian monarchy? The creators of the new documentary drama are trying to find an answer to this question and also understand what the last one hundred years turned into for the survived representatives of the royal family. The famous actor Viktor Sukhorukov became the project’s anchor and played splendidly the role of one of the Romanovs, Paul I, in the film “Poor, Poor Paul”. Using the unique library footages, documentary records and actable reconstructions, the authors are trying to understand what was going on with the Russian empire and the reigning family during those fatal five years. What happened to the Romanovs after 1918? How did different branches of the family fight for superiority and the title of “royal persons in exile”, who were the most famous impostors of the Romanovs? It is evident that the Romanovs’ age was not over after they stopped to reign. Scattered all over the world the most senior and the youngest representatives of the dynasty still acknowledge themselves to be the Romanovs. Together with them the film’s creators are trying to find an answer to the question what is it like to have a royal blood without a kingdom and what does the concept “the Romanovs” mean today, in 2013?

“The Soviet System” programme tells about the phenomenon, which is used as the title of this documentary series without any specific chronology and only shows the life of the huge country, which appeared in 1917 as a result of the Revolution and existed up to the moment when the USSR ceased its existence in Belovezhskaya Pushcha.
The aim of the film is not to reconsider certain previously given assessments, or cauterize some people and praise the others. We only want to tell about the way the country lived all these years, what events became important to it, what happened to it and in it, what was the impact over the rest of the world and, first of all, over the people, who lived in this country and still do.
Each film is based on a story of a person, or the fate of some significant event. This story will form the storyline, which will serve as a stem for other stories, not less important. Each episode will present a kind of “Portrait against Epoch”. Telling about one person or another or one event or another, we will also tell about the whole country in this or that year or decade.

The star wars: games for adults
40 years of space exploration are not just successful and unsuccessful launches, flights, Moon landings or endeavours to send expeditions to distant worlds. They also saw the fierce battle for domination in space between two superpowers, the USSR and the USA. It was not only to prove that capitalism or socialism was the best that the battle was waged. Both sides were getting ready for a real space war and both invented things that looked fantastic at first sight. Many of those things became known only years after their invention due to secrecy.

So, when George Lucas in late 70s was making his famous Star Wars movie, he hardly realised that many of the things, which seemed to exist only in his mind also existed in reality.

At the time when the Lucas movie hit the screens automatic cannons were being installed on Soviet “Almaz” orbital stations. With their help, cosmonauts were to shoot down enemy spaceships. And the shots were really fired…

In the fall of 1983, USSR Defence Minister Dmitry Ustinov ordered the commanders of the Space Defence Forces to use a combat laser unit against one of the first US space shuttles, – to look at the reaction of the Americans. And the order was carried out…

The Americans were going to explode a nuclear bomb on the Moon, and our military seriously considered establishing a Lunar missile base to fire missiles on America…

Those are just some episodes of the Star Wars that were waged in reality, not in sci-fi movies.

Certainly, all those projects were classified. Some of the witnesses of the events which happened 20 or 30 years ago who took part in the film are reluctant to describe space war projects. Deadly satellites, interceptor spaceships, combat laser units and the information on how much it all cost were considered an important state secret.

“Start Wars: games for adults” is a film about a secret space, about a space, which the newspapers almost have not mentioned during all those 40 years.

THE STORY OF ALL-RUSSIAN DECEIT. MEAT
The story of disappeared meat. Formerly meat products consisted of meat, but now its content is considerably lower. The creators of the film will reply to a lot of questions about the quality of meat products. What is supplied by manufacturers from meat factories? What do shops sell under the guise of meat? What is the real raw material for our favourite “meat products”? What is added to sausages, wieners, pelmeni and cans with braised meat? Why are chickens force-fed with antibiotics, beef syringed with brine, pork inflated with carbon monoxide? But the most important question is why all this information is not printed on product labels? Which meat shouldn’t we buy? Why can frozen chicken be dangerous? What is a real “Doctorskaya” sausage substituted with? Why are pelmeni now considered to be vegetables? We will find out how meat is syringed, mixed with soybean and different chemicals and stuffed with antibiotics. Together with the author we will visit the best Russian meat factories, farms and poultry factories. We will go to markets and expensive restaurants, fly to Argentina, the other end of the world, to see elite meat with our own eyes. We will learn the test results for braised meat, pelmeni, sausages and wieners. Experts will help to choose a high quality product and will explain how to distinguish between fresh and rotten meat. Journalist Alexey Yegorov tries meat products together with the guests. The top secret life
What is the strength of an indoctrinated spy? Why is it so difficult for the enemy to discover him? On what principles was the activity of Soviet agents in the US built during and immediately after the World War Two? Why did agents, who knew about repression and gulags, risked their lives for Lavrentyi Beria's agency?
Grigory Krichevsky’s film describes the life in the USSR and the escapes of two gifted Soviet spies.
After the Americans decrypted Soviet secret codes only two men working for the New York residency managed to escape the FBI in 1948. The only reason for their success was their faith in the bright Communist future, strong conviction that in the USSR they would be able to realize their dream of a decent life without unemployment, humiliation and wild capitalism.
Wherever they were, they were always of use to their new motherland. They worked for the defense of the USSR and against the US. Few people are aware that those agents built the first Soviet computer, conceived Zelenograd near Moscow as a semblance of Silicon Valley in the US. After the downfall of Khrushchev and the coming of Brezhnev the foreigners were moved aside to play second-grade roles. Party authorities could not allow any foreigners, whether or not indoctrinated, to manage the domestic electronic industry. Probably, that's why our computer industry is unable to compete with the West.
This film is the story of betrayal, love, espionage and disillusionment, it's the story of the Soviet science which was ahead of the US science in 50s and 60s and which is now almost of no use to anyone.

The unbroken grounds
In Russia, the XXth century may really be called the century of the agricultural reforms. The century started with an uncompleted attempt by Stolypin to modernize the villagery, while it ended with the similarly unsuccessful liberal reforms. As far as the communists are concerned, they deprived the villages of a natural economic development. The heroes of the documentary (the oldest ones remember as far back as to the pre-revolutionary period), historians, economists, sociologists and politicians present their stories.
No matter what is being said about the situation with the agriculture, it is far from catastrophic. The land now brings profit, and a big one. If it is so, then the government will hardly succeed in preserving it as its property. The world experience in both the capitalist Holland and the communist China demonstrates that in a market environment a peasant cultivates his own lands as properly as he cultivates the leased ones.
Nevertheless, for Russia, where the market economy has not taken shape yet, the private ownership of the land seems to be the major question. Most probably, in few years time the state land will only be found among various samples in the soils museum. Maybe, that is the only way to save the village.
These days, we have as many opinions as there are minds. The directors of the reformed collective farms demand government subsidies claiming they can not survive without it. Entrepreneurs state that the profitability of agriculture is next to that of the arms trade and are willing to invest their funds in agriculture but they need solid guarantees. Farmers could have improved the situation in the villagery, but they have been deprived of the loans, tax relieves and technical equipment. Meanwhile, common peasants live on their backyard crops and on the God’s mercy. Brought up under the collective farms, they are ready to work for any owner if one pays money.
The documentary offers no precise solutions, but for the first time the floor was given not only to those who draft reform plans in their quiet offices, but to peasants themselves, whose support is vital for any undertaking.
The shooting for the documentary took place in Moscow, Tver, Orel, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Vologda, Krasnodar and Altay regions, at poor and prosperous, collective and private farms.
The farmers of tiny Holland supplying half of the world with their potatoes tell about the way they arrange their work, as well as do the agricultural entrepreneurs of China where life is strictly regulated by the government.
Among those interviewed in the documentary are Egor Stroev, Boris Nemtsov, Herman Gref, English sociologist Theodore Shanin, academicians Alexey Emelianov and Tatiana Zaslavskaya, satire writer Mikhail Evdokimov.

The victory. one for all
55 years after the end of the Great Patriotic War, its vivid, full and objective picture has yet to be re-created. It was only recently that the historians took the trouble to try to look at those years in the context of the entirety of our history. It is the propaganda-edited and accommodative history of generals and politicians, the history of great battles and heroic deeds that has been in use until now. Numberless and often senseless casualties and the pain of common people, the real victors, have been either ousted at the background, or simply hushed up.
The citizens-in-arms that survived defeats and bottle-ups. Soldiers taken prisoner and made to go first through German concentration camps, then through their Soviet counterparts. Soldiers serving in penal battalions that miraculously survived in deadly attacks. Women taken to Germany as slaves. Survivors of the Leningrad blockade who even today cannot force themselves to throw away a stale crust of brown bread. Heroic troops whose feats of arms are forgotten.
These are the people who are given the opportunity to speak out in the film. They as much deserve the title of heroes of war, as do the famous generals. All those people shared one war, and nobody could stay away from it. This is why the victory was and is shared by all.
The German war veterans speak on the manner of the Russian fighting and the kind of relations the Wehrmacht soldiers had with local Russians. These German veterans who once fought on the Eastern Front, now renovate churches in Russia and take care of the Soviet prisoners’ graves in Germany. The German narration is not only verbal, but video as well, as a lot of captured German newsreels are included in the film.

The “purely russian murder”
The film “Purely Russian Murder” is the third film from the “Contemporary History” series. It has been made for the 40th day since the death of Galina Starovoitova. It is an attempt to answer the question why Starovoitova was killed and why a crime like that is possible in Russia.
Galina Starovoitova is described by her friends, relatives, allies and political opponents. Everybody says that being uncompromising in everything she did, she posed an obstacle to many, and she was dealt with in a straightforward Stalinist way: “no person – no problem”.
What happened on the last day was reconstructed by the stories of her parents, sister, husband, aide Ruslan Linkov, Deputy Head of the Federal Security Service Cherkesov and others.
Her difficult way into large-scale politics is described by her interregional deputy group colleague Yuri Afanasiev, former Minister of Interior and KGB Vadim Bakatin and President’s spokesman Vyacheslav Kostikov.

The “the seventeen moments of spring” 25 years after
The contemporary history is not necessarily events which are described in school textbooks. Often, many things we do not view at this angle get entwined with our lives. But years go by, many things change while those minor things remain.
That’s what happened with “The Seventeen Moments of Spring”. The TV Series has sparked a cult. For the first time since “Chapayev” anecdotes and literary parodies have appeared about its hero, Schtirlitz. Moreover, “perestroika” went by, the Soviet hierarchy of values broke down, the USSR ceased to exist, but the film is still being viewed and loved.
The two-episode documentary depicts the phenomena of “The Seventeen Moments”. For the first time in 25 years director Tatiana Lioznova agreed to tell the creative team and the anchor Leonid Parfyonov this epic which had turned into a legend, a myth. It was her participation in the work on the documentary that allowed to re-create events full of drama and curiosity. Her story is complemented by an independent investigation which allows to view same episodes at different angles.
The viewer will learn how an idea to have book written about a soviet secret agent within the ranks of nazi special services was born in KGB offices. How the writer Yulian Semyonov returned the money for the script which had been already sold to another studio in order to have Tatiana Lioznova shoot a film based on the script. How the film director selected the shooting crew and the actors. For instance, the role of Schtirlitz could have been played by Archil Gomiashvili, the actor who played the role of Ostap Bender, and Hitler could have been played by Leonid Kuravlyov. Besides her, Vyacheslav Tikhonov, Leonid Bronevoy, Oleg Tabakov, Lev Durov, Vyacheslav Shalevich, Evgeni Lazarev and Eleonora Shashkova will tell about their work on the roles. The viewer will learn why Iosif Kobzon who sang the songs for the film was never mentioned in the credits. As a matter of fact, for the first time in 25 years of screening his name will be inserted in the credits with the permission of the film director. Finally, we will present different opinions on “The Seventeen Moments” which will be expressed by war veterans from the village of Kryukovo, Victor Tsoi fans from Arbat, parodists Pavel Ass and Nestor Begemotov, culturologist Tatiana Cherednichenko. Some people think the events in the film reflect the true life, others think they are a fairy tale about the war.
The documentary will help see dozens of familiar scenes in different light. Why in the opening episodes Schtirlitz trifles with a key ring the meaning of which we have never learned? What Tikhonov was thinking when they filmed the famous scenes in which Schtirlits is silent? What did Lev Durov think up for the scene in which agent-provocateur Klaus got shot? And, finally, how easy and technically smooth was the filming of the famous scene in which Schtirlitz met his wife.
The film’s creative team went to shoot in Georgia, where a film advisor from KGB lives now, and also in GDR, where in 1971 a number of scenes were shot. We will see “Schtirlitz’s Mansion”, real Gestapo dungeons, the city of Maissen which became Burn in the film. In the Rude Gottlieb’s Beer Hall Tatiana Lioznova and the narrator Leonid Parfyonov will meet Otto Melis who played the role of Helmut the guard, rescuer of Kat and her baby.

Theatre named for the ussr
Life is theatre and people are its actors. If we follow the logic of the statement, all actions ever taken by people become a continuous theatric. The film “ Theatre Named for the USSR” features the theatre of Soviet rituals born in the process of formation of a new Soviet citizen. Baptism turned into Octoberism ceremony; as people grew up they shouted “Always ready!”, weddings turned red and burials went through the “ash revolution” – a special decree was issued that allowed cremation. New red holidays that entered people’s lives caused new rules of their celebration and indeed merged into one majour ritual – demonstration of solidarity to living and dead working people. The essence of the theatric in the USSR never changed. As new customers for the show — party leaders came they only changed the form of the revolutionary play. USSR theatre in the context of contemporary history became the core of the plot of the film.

Tito: the post-mortem biography
Joseph Bros Tito probably left more mysteries and myths than any other political figure of the 20th century. The future head of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a Croat by origin, in World War I fought against the Serbs as a soldier of the Austrian Army. The future head of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia spent the turbulent 1915 – 1920 years as a captive of Russia, nevertheless, at those years he never took part in revolutionary activity. Tito was a member of the Yugoslavian section of Comintern that was almost made away with by Stalin comb-outs; strange as it may seem, he didn’t only stay alive but revived the Communist Party of Yugoslavia consisting of 200 members only.Tito’s activity during World War II was also full of vague episodes. What was the degree of their fight with invaders in comparison with their war against the inner enemies of communism that could stop them from establishing their own power after the war? Did he really try to conclude peace with the Germans in March 1943 in order to beat another big Yugoslavian resistance brigade headed by Drazhe Mikhailovich? What was the backbone of the communist regime – the only dictatorship not established by the Red Army bayonets? The story of Tito’s relations with Stalin is no less mysterious: their disputes during which Tito demonstrated outstanding courage, assaulting attempts on the leader on the one hand and purely Stalin’s methods he used to suppress opposition after the break of 1948 on the other hand. It’s interesting why Khruschev tried to normalize relations with former revisionists and why Tito never entered neither the Warsaw Pact, nor the Council for Economic Mutual Assistance and created Non-Aligned Movement in opposition to the bi-polar world. After all, a lot of questions are caused by the bloody story of the collapse of Yugoslavia after Tito’s death. What was the basis of the Yugoslavian Unity? Was it possible to prevent the state from destruction? These items are especially interesting for the multi-national Russia.

Ussr – cuba: the story of love
Relationships between countries may be different: from tense to friendly and even brotherly. The relationship between the Soviet Union and Cuba is nothing but a romance. Soviet people loved Cubans. They were young, beautiful, cheerful and they valued freedom most of all. The Cubans liberated their land from dictator Batista first and from American enslavers on their own without our assistance. Without us prompting them they started building socialism in their country, proving forty years after October Revolution that we took the right direction. More than that, nobody had any doubt that they will by all means manage where we failed. We were prepared to do anything to make them succeed.

White blood cells
Each year, more than three thousand children in Russia acquired different types of leukemia. Such diagnosis means death warrant for almost half of those who suffer from it.
However, many more children — up to 70-80% — could be cured both in Russian hospitals and abroad. The difference means hundreds of children. Boys and girls fight against the disease and help the others with their own example, support, and words. The children that can survive. And continue to live.
There are only two ways to cure them: chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation. The first way means that they had to be nearly killed to be cured. The second way is used when the first one doesn’t help any more. The work of physicians that struggle against leukemia means virtually balancing between life and death of their little patients. The result is saved lives. More of them could be saved, however, medicine, equipment and new hospitals are required for that. The existing hospitals and oncohematological departments cannot admit all the diseased. Many of them die waiting for the operation. Sometimes through the lack of money, or because it takes the officials too long to make decision.
The situation can be cured through construction of new special clinics. However, the problems are the same – lack of financing and bureaucratic longstops.

Wreck of the battleship
On October 29, 1955 on the roadstead of Sebastopol bay, one of the largest disasters in the history of the national navy after the WW2 occured.
“Novorossiysk” battleship (former Italian battleship Julius Cesar), the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet squadron, was at anchor 150 meters off the shore. At 1.30 a.m. sharp, at the rostrum starboard of the ship an explosion of an unknown origin occurred. The explosion was so extraordinarily powerful that all of the decks were broken through. The battleship took a list, and the water started to inundate one compartment after another. The crew at “Novorossiysk” desperately fought for the survival of the ship. Urgently, emergency teams arrived from the ships in the roads nearby. The entire command of the Black Sea Fleet, including admiral Victor Parkhomenko, arrived to the sinking ship, but even the top officers failed to properly arrange the activities of the battleship salvation. None of the sailors and officers left their action stations, even though with every single minute the chance to escape diminished. The command never ordered the evacuation of the crew. In over two hours the battleship overturned and sank with entire Sebastopol watching the scene.
Officially, there were 609 victims. But some data suggests that the real casualties exceeded 1000. Some seamen could swim to the shore, others were walled up alive within the hull. The rescuers could only get 7 sailors out of their iron captivity, two more were saved by the frogmen almost three days later.
Until now, nobody knows anything about the cause of the battleship wreck. Any materials relating to the case were immediately classified, and they still are in the archives with “Top Secret" mark. Officially, the cause of the explosion was German ground mine, but many doubt it was so.
The documentary reconstructs the struggle for saving the ship and the crew, tells about the sailoring those days, and offers other enigmatic versions of the event. The sailors and officers who survived that night, tell what happened then.
