Davos always davos. vadim glusker’s grand report
From 19th century, Davos is the favourite holiday destination of European elite. Russian social democrats preferred to holiday in the Swiss Alps. There is no better place for thinking about the destinies of the future world revolution than the quiet mountain slopes. Here, in Davos, the grandson of the Emperor Alexander the Second, the great prince Dmitry Pavlovich, who participated in preparation of the murder of Grigory Rasputin, died from tuberculosis. Thus, Davos has always been a “Russian” place, but not only from 1987, when the official (yet soviet) delegation attended the forum for the first time. Davos is a prestigious “service” club. The world problems of humanity, poverty, climate and the ways to secure peace in the Middle East are discussed here. Davos is not an image brand, but rather a specific style of managing the world …

Investments into revolution
It is an open secret that the revolution of 1917 succeeded due in large part to foreign financing. German financing is most known, which funds allegedly paid for all activities of Vladimir Lenin and his comrades. Lately, more is being said about millions of yens, paid by the Japanese General Staff for disturbing the situation in Russia on the eve of the Russian-Japanese war. As we remember, the war started in 1904, and less than in one year revolution broke out in Russia. Many researchers say that this revolution has served the reason for the great Russia losing the war to small Japan. The English are mentioned by far less, however, they are notorious puppeteers in the politic arena of the world and they only gained from the fact that the Russian empire, which has always been the geopolitical rival of England from the times of Peter the Great, has fallen. Many researchers adduce the arguments to support the fact that the English contributed to the revolutions in February and October 1917. The position of America in respect to the Russian revolutions is even less mentioned. However, it should be noted that the USA were the first to recognize the USSR and the first foreign businessman who started operations with the Soviet Russia on a large scale was an American. Famous Armand Hammer. Hammer and his brother Victor brought national valuables out of Russia in large volume. This was exactly how many of the most famous work-pieces of Faberge were moved abroad. Only Forbes collection possesses as many Easter eggs manufactured by "Faberge" as remain in all museums in Russia…

Russian Empire
The “Russian Empire” project by Leonid Parfyonov, dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Empire and the founding of Saint-Petersburg, is a contemporary view on 300 years of the Russian state.
“Russian Empire” required weeks of shooting in the Russian capitals and dozens of trips around the current and former territories of the country, to unique places which had never been filmed in the past. From a Polish village which Peter the Great once passed by, to the roofs of the Hermitage and tiny German towns from where the Russian empresses had come from. The program includes filming at the sites of battles fought by the Russian armies, from Rome to Beirut, and the sites of the national disasters from Sebastopol to Eastern Prussia. The program includes historic anecdotes, real diaries, little-known documentational evidence and letters of the top personalities of the Empire.
The “Russian Empire” is a personal history of this country, a TV investigation of the Russian imperial ideal which is still alive for both its supporters and adversaries.

The congress of losers?
“The Congress of Losers?” of the “Contemporary History” series is devoted to the 10th anniversary of the first Congress of People’s Deputies of the USSR.
This film is about the beginning of an end. It is about the crumbling of the empire called the Soviet Union. In May 1989, all the country was glued to TV screens and radios: everyone followed the Congress of People’s Deputies. The Communists’ dream came true: at that time the people and the party were almost one.
“We” hoped that “they” knew where to go from there, and they didn’t know how to agree with each other. We thought that the country took a free breath for the first time, and it turned out that is was the last breath. We thought we were moving away from the abyss, but in reality…
Some came to the Congress in order to build “the socialism with a human face”, the others came to destroy it, and still others didn’t want any change at all.
Together, we failed to build a new Tower of Babel…
The film features: Yuri Afanasyev, Nikolai Travkin, Anatoly Lukyanov, Nikolai Ryzhkov, Mikhail Gorbachov, Eduard Shevardnadze and other deputies of the first Congress.

The olympic mysteries of russia
The film is dedicated to the World Olympic Movement and the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980. A lot of news and video reels as well as the extracts from the newspapers of the 19th and 20th centuries which give the real idea of the development of sport activities around the world are shown in the film.

The film starts with the symbolic scenes of the Russian Tsar Nikolay II and the first Russian President Boris Eltsin playing tennis. One hundred years separate the events and during these years sport transformed from "a clean pretty occupation for decent people into a huge business and politics" which usually contain a lot of mysteries, that are revealed in the film. The author takes the audience along the labyrinths of "the cold war" debunking the hypocritical slogan of the past : "Sport is out of politics".

How did it all start? The World Olympic movement was born in Athens in 1896 where the first Olympic Games took place. Then Stockholm, Berlin: winter and summer Games. The stronger and more influential the state was, the more possibilities it had to be chosen as a place for Olympic Games. Every state understood it. Hitler in 1936 made all the possible to have that unforgettable event in his country. Due to external and internal obstacles Russia was excluded from the International Olympic Committee and up till 1952 it did not participated in the Games and in all the ways opposed "the bourgeois Olympic Games" by their own Olympic Games known as "Spartakiads".

What steps did the states and sportsmen undertake to win in that battle? What else did Russia do to undermine the World Olympic Movement? And why did Russia in the long run decide to join the International Olympic Committee? How was Moscow chosen to be the place for the 1980 Olympic Games and who boycotted the Moscow Games due to the invasion of Soviet troops to Afghanistan? Answers to these and many other questions, strengthened by the episodes from the chronicles and interviews of eye-witnesses, you will find in this film.

Nevertheless, despite of its political colouring, Olympic Games represent the greatest sport festivity all over the world : competitions, performances and celebrations that is the atmosphere that reigns among the ordinary people.

The other day
The Other Day program maintains a different, quite uncharacteristic approach to the news programming. Program authors abandoned the traditional format of the Russian news broadcast, i.e. politics, business news, cultural events, sports updates and weather forecast, and instead decided to cover everything that might be interesting to the audience – haute couture news may follow reports from Russia’s remote regions, or reports from the world’s troublespots may follow episodes describing life in Hollywood. To a certain extent, Leonid Parfenov has already tested such method of presenting information in his previous project called The Other Day. Anno Domini. Besides program content, the format has been changed as well. A high pace of presenting information, extensive video reports that greatly contribute to the author’s comments.

And at the same time – it’s an ascetic city where dwellers have little entertainment, few theatres, cinemas, where there is a strict prohibition law, where women wear black from head to toes, where men and bearded mullahs are somber and non-smiling.
A fresh man will find it hard to believe that 20 years ago Teheran was called Middle East Paris.

The top secret life
What is the strength of an indoctrinated spy? Why is it so difficult for the enemy to discover him? On what principles was the activity of Soviet agents in the US built during and immediately after the World War Two? Why did agents, who knew about repression and gulags, risked their lives for Lavrentyi Beria's agency?
Grigory Krichevsky’s film describes the life in the USSR and the escapes of two gifted Soviet spies.
After the Americans decrypted Soviet secret codes only two men working for the New York residency managed to escape the FBI in 1948. The only reason for their success was their faith in the bright Communist future, strong conviction that in the USSR they would be able to realize their dream of a decent life without unemployment, humiliation and wild capitalism.
Wherever they were, they were always of use to their new motherland. They worked for the defense of the USSR and against the US. Few people are aware that those agents built the first Soviet computer, conceived Zelenograd near Moscow as a semblance of Silicon Valley in the US. After the downfall of Khrushchev and the coming of Brezhnev the foreigners were moved aside to play second-grade roles. Party authorities could not allow any foreigners, whether or not indoctrinated, to manage the domestic electronic industry. Probably, that's why our computer industry is unable to compete with the West.
This film is the story of betrayal, love, espionage and disillusionment, it's the story of the Soviet science which was ahead of the US science in 50s and 60s and which is now almost of no use to anyone.

The unbroken grounds
In Russia, the XXth century may really be called the century of the agricultural reforms. The century started with an uncompleted attempt by Stolypin to modernize the villagery, while it ended with the similarly unsuccessful liberal reforms. As far as the communists are concerned, they deprived the villages of a natural economic development. The heroes of the documentary (the oldest ones remember as far back as to the pre-revolutionary period), historians, economists, sociologists and politicians present their stories.
No matter what is being said about the situation with the agriculture, it is far from catastrophic. The land now brings profit, and a big one. If it is so, then the government will hardly succeed in preserving it as its property. The world experience in both the capitalist Holland and the communist China demonstrates that in a market environment a peasant cultivates his own lands as properly as he cultivates the leased ones.
Nevertheless, for Russia, where the market economy has not taken shape yet, the private ownership of the land seems to be the major question. Most probably, in few years time the state land will only be found among various samples in the soils museum. Maybe, that is the only way to save the village.
These days, we have as many opinions as there are minds. The directors of the reformed collective farms demand government subsidies claiming they can not survive without it. Entrepreneurs state that the profitability of agriculture is next to that of the arms trade and are willing to invest their funds in agriculture but they need solid guarantees. Farmers could have improved the situation in the villagery, but they have been deprived of the loans, tax relieves and technical equipment. Meanwhile, common peasants live on their backyard crops and on the God’s mercy. Brought up under the collective farms, they are ready to work for any owner if one pays money.
The documentary offers no precise solutions, but for the first time the floor was given not only to those who draft reform plans in their quiet offices, but to peasants themselves, whose support is vital for any undertaking.
The shooting for the documentary took place in Moscow, Tver, Orel, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Vologda, Krasnodar and Altay regions, at poor and prosperous, collective and private farms.
The farmers of tiny Holland supplying half of the world with their potatoes tell about the way they arrange their work, as well as do the agricultural entrepreneurs of China where life is strictly regulated by the government.
Among those interviewed in the documentary are Egor Stroev, Boris Nemtsov, Herman Gref, English sociologist Theodore Shanin, academicians Alexey Emelianov and Tatiana Zaslavskaya, satire writer Mikhail Evdokimov.

Theatre named for the ussr
Life is theatre and people are its actors. If we follow the logic of the statement, all actions ever taken by people become a continuous theatric. The film “ Theatre Named for the USSR” features the theatre of Soviet rituals born in the process of formation of a new Soviet citizen. Baptism turned into Octoberism ceremony; as people grew up they shouted “Always ready!”, weddings turned red and burials went through the “ash revolution” – a special decree was issued that allowed cremation. New red holidays that entered people’s lives caused new rules of their celebration and indeed merged into one majour ritual – demonstration of solidarity to living and dead working people. The essence of the theatric in the USSR never changed. As new customers for the show — party leaders came they only changed the form of the revolutionary play. USSR theatre in the context of contemporary history became the core of the plot of the film.

Andrey Kalinin’s film is an exploration of mysterious disappearance of the notorious stores of gold of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union – “the gold of the party”. When bolshiviks took the power first thing they transferred the treasury of the tsars to western banks: Trotsky got 80 millions dollars, Zinoviev – 75 millions franks, Lenin got 70 millions franks and Dzerzhinsky got 75 millions franks. In the autumn of 1991 Eltsin came to power and found out that the safes were empty, reports on financial activity of the USSR abroad and the accounts of the Communist Party disappeared… Then followed a number of mysterious suicides of officials. Nikolay Kruchina, the head of administration of the Communist Party fell out of the window on 28 August 1991; his successor – Georgy Pavlov committed suicide on 6 October; 11 days later – Dmitry Lisovolik, the head of USA Section of the international department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. All of them were the key persons connected with the Secretary of the Central Committee – Valentin Falin. The number of mysterious suicides of former officials amounted to 1746 within the period from August to October 1991 in Russia. About the same number of joint ventures were registered. The schemes of money transfers were created in the heart of KGB. Secret receipts were found in the archives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in the course of investigation: “… I, the member of the Communist Party of the USSR, hereby undertake to maintain the facilities of the Party entrusted upon me…”. Approximately 600 bank accounts were revealed in Russia and about 500 abroad. Corporate group “SIABEKO” was incorporated in Switzerland for the facilities of the party, KGB and the Main Intelligence Directorate. The head of the corporate group was Boris Berstein, an expatriate from Odessa. Colonel Dmitry Yakubovsky made a meteoric carrier and joined one of the KGB groups in 1989, who is now a well-known attorney. Egor Gaidar entered into a sensational agreement with an American private detective agency “KROLLA” to investigate and gather information on monetary assets and funds of the Russians abroad. Within three months the report was submitted to Gaidar, which later disappeared. Some thirty prominent politicians were included in the list of accounts:Commentary: Valentin Falin – the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party; Valentin Pavlov – the Chairman of the Ministers Board of the USSR; Artem Tarasov – an entrepreneur, Oleg Sheinin – a member of Politbureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party; Sergey Aristov – ex-head of the General Prosecutor’s Office of RF; Pavel Voshchanov – Eltsin’s press secretary; Alexander Dobrovinsky – attorney; Valentin Stepankov – the General Prosecutor of RF; Yuri Skuratov – the General Prosecutor of RF; Vladimir Shumeiko – First Vice Prime Minister; Valery Streletsky – the head of the “political housecleaning” department at the Presidential Security Department; Georgy Sattarov – the President’s assistant; Gennady Bourbouolis – the state secretary of the RF; Alexander Rutskoi – Vice-president of the RF; Roman Shleinov – the head of investigation department of the newspaper “Novaya Gazetta”; Anatoly Kulikov – the Minister of Internal Affairs.

Sailors use to call it “hillock in the sea”, local inhabitants dubbed it “world’s end” or bluntly “isle of evil”. For quite long, Japanese thought they could do anything they liked to do on this island. They redeveloped it into a fortress, the most unassailable one of those built in the twentieth century. At present, it is very hard to get to the island of Shumshu. The northernmost island of the Kuril ridge is still uninhabited.

Top secret. information for consideration / 143. Attempt Upon The Lives of Leaders
Those who have the power attract various people like a magnet: flattering friends and sincere team-mates, obvious enemies and secret ill-wishers. Attempts upon lives of emperors, kings and presidents were made at all times. The reason could be the desire of revenge for unfair attitude to them personally or to the people, the wish to make history or at least to attract the attention of public.

Eventually, incredible details about the attempts upon the chief executives of the state come up to the surface. It is still unclear who shot at Vladimir Lenin in 1918. The attempt upon the life of Generalissimo Stalin remained in shadow. Even after numerous investigations, forty years after John F. Kennedy’s murder the American authorities can’t find the person who had arranged the assassination. In India, they can’t forget the murder of Indira Gandhi who was shot by the guard officer who carried her children in his arms and brought them up.

Various versions of notorious attempts upon lives of leaders are presented in the film. Was Savely Dmitriev who dared to lift hand against Joseph Stalin mentally sane? What were the motivations of the mayor Ivan Kislov, who took an attempt upon the life of Boris Yeltsin? The exclusive interview of Alexander Shmonov – the might-have-been murderer of Mikhail Gorbachev is displayed in the film.

The bloody pursuit after leaders goes on. The officials of Federal Security Guards never comment of the gossips about the attempts on the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Never do they inform about the real cases of prevented attempts. It is genuinely known about three attempts upon Putin. The reporters of “Top Secret” will try and find out who had attempted to poison the President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko and whom the death of Prime-minister of Georgia Zurab Zhvania was profitable for.

Top secret. information for consideration / 159. The Secret Power of Shambala
In the XX century the two totalitarian systems showed the world their incontestable might. The might of communism and the might of fascism. It is commonly assumed that it was the power of faithless material powers, however, both the Nazi Germany and the Soviet Russia used the services of Gods. What kind of Gods were those? The Soviet totalitarian regime needed rituals. A five-pointed star has become the symbol of the soviet state. Demonstrations replaced sacred processions, and faces of the leaders replaced icons. Later on, the incorruptible relics of Lenin appeared. All that strongly resembled shamanistic ceremonies. Just like the torch-light processions of secret organizations of the Third Reich. The legend about Shambala and the Arian tribes hiding there has become the main racial principle of the German Nazi, who proclaimed themselves the inheritors of the ancient civilization. Hitler will say: “Those who consider the national socialism as only a political movement – know very little about it”.Why did the governments of the USSR and Germany consign expeditions to the mysterious lands of Tibet a number of times? What did the representatives of special forces search for in the ancient oriental houses of God?

Top secret. information for consideration / 163. Escape from Berlin
In the middle of 50-ies, the escape of Eastern Germans from the DDR has turned into the natural hazards. Nikita Khrushchev called the Berlin problem “a bone in the throat of the Soviet Union”. Erich Honneker supervised the erection of the Berlin Wall personally. He then was the member of the National Defense Board of the DDR. After the division, the area behind the Wall was called the “Zone” – this was the DDR.The window to the Western Berlin shut on August 13, 1961. The massive construction blocked 193 streets, 8 tram lines, and 4 metro lines. Water supply and gas pipes were welded, electric power and telephone cable were cut off and wells were brick-encased with the punctuality so peculiar to Germans. Channels and rivers were blocked with grates. The division line went through squares and bridges, boulevards and cemeteries, ponds and parks… 150 million dollars were spent on erection of the “Concrete Curtain” 155 kilometers long.Upon the erection of the wall, ominous silence covered the Eastern part, submachine gun bursts could be heard in the night. Frontier guards shot at the Germans who tried to escape. Ten thousand citizens of the DDR tried to bridge the wall during the 28 years of its existence. Officially, 254 people were killed at the Berlin Wall. The film features the most famous mass escape under the Berlin Wall, the secrets of DDR intelligence and many other things.

Profession: reporter / ¹ 167. (170) At the World’s End
During the Cold War, a special station to detect enemy warplanes was developed on Russia’s Commandor Islands. Nobody lived there at the time, except for military. They piled the ground, laid it with concrete, built barracks and a bunker. In case of war, this small garrison would have existed for just fifteen minutes after the warfare beginning. Their only task was to inform the headquarters of the launch of the attack. In fact, this was the only thing they would been able to do, as radars are destroyed in the first place during any warfare. Now, the Cold War is over, but the station still exists.
