Siege of leningrad (faces of the siege)
The film is timed to the anniversary of lifting the siege of Leningrad.
New documents in the authors’ disposal allow to answer many arguable questions about the siege of Leningrad. Discussions have been held recently speculating if Hitler wanted to assault Leningrad or not. Having analyzed tens of archive papers and research works, we can make a clear conclusion: it’s not the that he just wanted it – he dreamed of it! In the beginning of the war, it was Leningrad but not Moscow, that was his troops’ main target. The authors of the film obtain the unchallengeable documents proving this version.
What plans did the Finnish Marshal Mannerheim have? What is the role of Finland in the siege of Leningrad? The memoirs of Finnish war veterans, historians, the chronicles so far unknown in Russia showing that there were almost no active military actions in the Soviet-Finnish Front, and Finnish soldiers were busy mostly with agriculture. The Nazi who occupied the surroundings of Leningrad – who were they? There will be shown interviews of the veterans of the fight for Leningrad who were on the opposite side. There is no unity among them. Some of them ask the citizens of Leningrad for forgiveness and are aware of the criminal nature of the siege – they are the majority. However, there are those who still believe their actions were right.
The German chronicles illustrating the attitude of Germany towards the Soviet Union in the beginning of the war. The propaganda shows the Soviet captives. The text behind the screen is approximately as follows: “Churchill and Roosevelt! Look at the faces of the people you help! These are Bolshevik hordes. They should be eliminated. They are not worth calling them humans…”.
The German chronicles show good nutritious feeding of German soldiers in the distance of several kilometers from the city where people go mad of hunger.
Memoirs of those who survived the siege. A school girl who starved in Leningrad, the future merited actor of Russia, Alisa Freundlich. Merited actor Nikolai Trofimov recalls how he lost his three-month-old son and looked for the place where he could bury the boy and how he helped to dismantle the remains of a tram filled with people after a German shell had hit it.
Regular citizens of Leningrad recall their past. An explosion torn off a little girl’s arm and she cried…because the bread card was left in it. After winter, saunas were open. People washed themselves together in one room and laughed at each other to tears: people were emaciated to the limit.

Stalingrad - 1942. last christmas
Six decades have passed since the last shots of the bloodiest and lengthiest battle of World War II were fired. The fierce fighting on both banks of the Volga river lasted for two hundred and twenty days and nights. Here, not far from Stalingrad, a whole German army was encircled and ultimately torn to shreds. Priest Kurt Reuber, also a philosopher and painter, was among those 300,000 German soldiers and officers encircled by the Red Army near Stalingrad. On Christmas Eve of 1942, he painted the Mother of God with the infant in her hands on the backside a school map. That painting became a hope of survival for the encircled German forces. The film portrays the history of the painting titled “Madonna of Stalingrad,” which is now exhibited at one of Germany’s Protestant cathedrals. The film includes interviews with Uta Tolklit, daughter of Kurt Reuber, pastor Zoppe, Russian veterans Maria Danina and Anatoly Merezhko, and German veterans of the battle of Stalingrad.

The afghan trap
Today it seems that everything is known about the Afghan war.
That in 1979 the Soviet invasion of the Southern neighbor’s territory was the first and the only one. That the decision to bring in troops was not thought out well and was taken too hastily by several mentally weak Kremlin rulers.
That the Soviet Army did not fight well and was doomed to lose in Afghanistan.
It’s all wrong.
It’s all not quite simple.
The two-episode documentary film “The Afghan Trap” of the “Contemporary History” series raises a lot of difficult questions.
What was happening in the friendly Afghanistan in early 70s? Why did the Politbureau, which initially had been unanimous in rejecting the idea of armed intervention, finally decide to go ahead? How did Soviet troops get involved in military action and when did our troops learn to fight? Why couldn’t politicians and diplomats achieve political settlement for such a long time? What was the outcome of the Afghan war, and has it ended at all? For the first time the history of Soviet invasion will be presented from various points of view, through the eyes of all the sides involved in the conflict. Soviet leaders, military chiefs, diplomats, advisors, secret service officers, soldiers and officers will all tell their truths...
Afghans who occupied high posts after the victory of the April revolution and fought on the side of the Communist regime...
Leaders and fighters of the armed opposition – those who were first called bandits, Dushmans and then Modjaheds, defenders of faith...
The narrator, Evgeni Kiselyov, who worked as a military interpreter, and the film team will show how the USSR became gradually involved in the internal conflict of the neighboring country and ended up trapped in the “Afghan trap”. And how difficult it was to escape from that trap.

The forgotten regiment
“The Forgotten Regiment” is a program about the missing in action and those who still cherish the hope of finding them.
Yevgeny Kirichenko, a war journalist NTV, presents the program.
As long as the soldier remains at duty, the state needs him. But once he is registered as missing in action, the state, most often than not, ignores him. If we count all the missing in action in the local conflicts of the last few years, we could put together more than one regiment. The names of the missing in action are crossed out of the lists of their detachments, but they are not crossed out of the memories of their families who have spent years trying to find at least the grave of their son, brother or father. The program's goal is to make this search more efficient using the opportunities offered by TV.
The program covers lives of concrete soldiers and officers who did not come back from war. Their mothers and companions in arms, as well as the people, who try to find them, speak about them.
The program tells about those who performed their "international duty" in Afghanistan and Korea, Vietnam and Angola, Mozambique and South Yemen. Information about many officers missing in action at those wars remains secret.
The idea is that each program should yield a result, showing a mother meeting with her son who has been rescued from the Chehen captivity or children learning the whereabouts of the grave of their father missing in action since the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

The last war of the empire
Exactly 25 years ago, the night from 26 to 27 December 1979 the first aircrafts with Soviet troops on board landed in the airport of Kabul. The war in Afghanistan, which lasted 9 years and cost almost 15 thousand lives of soldiers and officers started. Nobody can say how many lives of Afghan people it cost.
Who and how took the decision in our country on bringing of our troops to Afghanistan? Why the first victim of our soldiers was Faizula Amin, the Afghan Leader, who actually has called for the Soviet Army to protect revolution and the revolutionary government? A Genrich Borovik film “The Last War of the Empire” answers these questions.

The victory. one for all
55 years after the end of the Great Patriotic War, its vivid, full and objective picture has yet to be re-created. It was only recently that the historians took the trouble to try to look at those years in the context of the entirety of our history. It is the propaganda-edited and accommodative history of generals and politicians, the history of great battles and heroic deeds that has been in use until now. Numberless and often senseless casualties and the pain of common people, the real victors, have been either ousted at the background, or simply hushed up.
The citizens-in-arms that survived defeats and bottle-ups. Soldiers taken prisoner and made to go first through German concentration camps, then through their Soviet counterparts. Soldiers serving in penal battalions that miraculously survived in deadly attacks. Women taken to Germany as slaves. Survivors of the Leningrad blockade who even today cannot force themselves to throw away a stale crust of brown bread. Heroic troops whose feats of arms are forgotten.
These are the people who are given the opportunity to speak out in the film. They as much deserve the title of heroes of war, as do the famous generals. All those people shared one war, and nobody could stay away from it. This is why the victory was and is shared by all.
The German war veterans speak on the manner of the Russian fighting and the kind of relations the Wehrmacht soldiers had with local Russians. These German veterans who once fought on the Eastern Front, now renovate churches in Russia and take care of the Soviet prisoners’ graves in Germany. The German narration is not only verbal, but video as well, as a lot of captured German newsreels are included in the film.

Top secret. information for consideration / 152. Black Diggers
They are called “black archeologists” in Europe. In the South America, they have a different name – “tombaroli”, meaning “violators of tombs”. They use powerful equipment including helicopters. Their targets are ancient burial hills and neglected cemeteries where unheard-of valuables could be hidden. The Russian “black diggers” work exclusively in the battle fields of the Second World War. Battle relics open the way to prosperity. There is a demand for anything– tanks, pulled out to the surface from swamps, old aircrafts, orders and explosives. The “black diggers” are divided into two categories. The first search the tombs for relics only – orders, documents and ammunition. The second extract armament, which is then sold to criminals. There are fence dealers between “archeologists” and their customers. It is exactly the fence dealers who arrive to the areas of particularly fierce battles with faked documents of museum officers, military experts of the Defense Ministry and other officials. Old villagers show the areas of the largest battles to the fence dealers just for a hundred or two rubles – this is where lodes of armament and war attribution can be discovered. One and a half million of soviet soldiers were reported missing according to the archives card systems. Hundreds of thousands are waiting for any news about their beloved ones. The “black diggers” take their hopes away by throwing the soldier’s identification plates away.
