In search of France / 8, FILMMAKING IN FRENCH STYLE
French film always gathered full movie theatres not only in Cannes, but also in numerous cinemas and village clubs scattered all over the vast USSR. It was time when one and the same film was shown almost for half a year in one cinema and people went to see it ten times or even more! If Pierre Richard had lived in the USSR he surely would have become the People’s Artist of the USSR because he was and is still loved as no other French actor. It would be untrue to say that the comedy film The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe is the most popular film in the USSR as other Richard’s films are also extremely popular in our country. La Chèvre (Knock on Wood), Le Coup du parapluie (The Umbrella Coup), Le Jouet (The Toy) – it’s hard to name them all! Many people are nostalgic about the time when these films were released on the screen… In the 70-s the films about love story of beautiful Angelique were perhaps one of the most affecting sights for the Soviet viewers. In order to buy a ticket “for Angelique” people had to line up to the cinema box-office almost from the very morning. Robert Hossein is a serious theatrical director who staged Dostoevsky, Chekhov and many other great authors, but over 40 years the whole world knows him only as Joffrey de Peyrac, husband of beautiful Angelique – Michèle Mercier. It’s amazing: the Soviet Union exists no more, those girls, who went to see the first run of the films about Angelique with fluttering hearts, have become grandmothers, but these films are still popular and well-loved. With the participation of: Joel Chapron, member of selection team for East European films at the Cannes Film Festival; Pierre Richard, actor, director; Robert Hossein, actor, director; Michèle Mercier, actress; Anouk Aimée, actress; Thierry Frémaux, General Director of the Cannes Film Festival; Jean Francoise Roger, General Director of Cinémathèque française (French Cinemateque).

Zinovy Peshkov, revolutionary Yakov Sverdlov’s brother and Maxim Gorky’s adopted son, was called “Russian owner of Paris” by his contemporaries. How did a son of a shoemaker from Nizny Novgorod manage to become one of the topside people of French politics, occupying high posts in diplomatic and intelligence services? But Zinovy Peshkov considered his rank of legionnaire to be his main military rank. Charles de Gaulle himself highly appreciated Peshkov’s business and personal qualities. According to people who knew Peshkov, he was a great man both in actions and in feelings. Reserved and restrained, he was a real seducer who loved and was loved by women. With the participation of: Francis Yure, Academician, Zinovy Peshkov’s biographer; Collette Tolstoy, Zinovy Peshkov’s friend; Pyotr Sheremetev, President of the International Council of Russian Compatriots; Max Gallo, member of the French Academy of Sciences, Charles de Gaulle’s biographer; Alexy Neviyasky, Director of Foreign Legion Museum; Alexandre Mora, Director of the Mémorial Charles de Gaulle; Konstantin Melnik, ex-chief of French secret service; Frederic Dufour, exhibition curator of the Charles de Gaulle Museum.
