Brilliant surgeon Vladimir Pershin (Andrey Ilyin) is nicknamed Mozart by his colleagues. Pershin inherited his mother’s love to works of this eminent composer, he even operates to Mozart’s music. Vladimir has everything a man could dream of: colleagues’ recognition, patients’ respect and a young girlfriend Vera (Karina Razumovskaya), whom he jokingly calls Constanze just as Mozart’s wife. But all of a sudden Pershin’s life changes dramatically. Unknown armed men take him to the suburbs and near gunpoint make him operate a criminal boss nicknamed Graf (Vyacheslav Razbegaev) wounded as the result of a contract killing. After a successful operation Vladimir is taken by force to a country house on Chyortovo lake where the criminal group is hiding out. Pershin understands that he is not likely to stay alive even after a successful treatment so he escapes. He gets to the nearest railway station, calls Vera and asks her to meet him. Together they decide to wait out the pursuit in a flat owned by Katya’s friend Nonna... Pershin calls to his work and learns that his seriously ill patient Katya Maslichkina died when he was captured by the bandits, in hospital his colleagues provide him with an alibi saying that he was sent on a mission to a disaster area. Vera insists that Pershin should file a complaint to the police but now it can be dangerous. Pershin returns home and finds there a hatful of money and a note from Graf in which he thanks the surgeon and asks him keep silent. Pershin meets his fake wife Louise and pays her the next installment for residential registration. Graf calls Pershin and demands that the surgeon should hasten the death of seriously wounded businessman Kovalyov taken to Pershin’s hospital. Outraged Pershin refuses to violate his doctor’s duty and promises to save Kovalyov in spite of Graf. However against all Pershin’s efforts Kovalyov dies, and at home Pershin finds another cheque and note with thanks from Graf. Pershin is tired of Graf’s harassments and decides to go to the seaside with Vera on vacation. Pershin’s old friend Malyshevsky (Viktor Saraykin), who arranged the fake marriage with Louise (Natalya Vasko) many years ago, wants her to tell where her ex-husband Graf is. But Louise knows nothing about Graf’s fate, she believes he died in a car accident many years ago. On the contrary Malyshevsky is not sure that Graf didn’t survive. On vacation Vera decides to leave Pershin as she understands that he is not going to marry her. Pershin returns to Moscow alone and at the airport notices the bandit who has kidnapped him and who is now meeting the mother of the late Katya Maslichkina. The surgeon begins his own investigation of Katya’s death. Pershin visits Maslichkina’s parents and learns that they consulted him on Louise’s recommendation. He tells them that the man who gave a lift to Katya’s mother headed his night kidnapping. Pershin decides to ask Louise about her connections with Maslichkin, he arrives to her office to find out that she was murdered. Investigator Perventsev detains Pershin on suspicion of killing his wife. Vera learns about Pershin’s detainment, returns to him and finds him the lawyer Donnikov (Alexander Kobzar). By Malyshevsky’s order Donnikov pretends that he is trying to develop a defence strategy but instead his aim is to find out Graf’s location and the circumstances of the doctor’s mysterious night disappearance. On Pershin’s request Vera finds out that the picture he saw in the house where he was imprisoned by Graf’s men was painted on Chyortovo lake. Donnikov tells him that previously Maslichkin (Igor Nikolaev) and Graf were business partners. Soon a newspaper publishes that after Graf’s death Maslichkin and Louise united their enterprises and joined the corporation headed by Malyshevsky. Later a criminal group rented vehicles from Louise’s company to transport nuclear uranium for sale, but the other criminal group hijacked the cargo in transit. Maslichkin tells Pershin that his kidnapper Epifanov (Alim Fedorinsky) was the business partner of Malyshevsky, Louise and Graf, and Kovalyov’s widow (Anna Rasstalnaya) says that it was Epifanov who was responsible for selection of the personnel for Kovalyov’s operation and he invited Pershin only at the very last stage. Pershin decides to puzzle everything out by himself and goes to Choyrtovo lake to Graf’s house and becomes a witness of a gangland shootout. Malyshevsky is killed before Pershin’s eyes, Graf appears later and discloses that after all he was recruited by Special Forces and organized the fake operation with the transportation of uranium to get in contact with the terrorists who wanted to buy it. Malyshevsky gets on the hook and attempts to steal the nuclear resources for his personal gain.
