Alexander Varlamov works in the special police service that deals with solving serial murders and violent crimes committed by people with mental disorders. When the standard methods don’t work and an investigation comes to a deadlock Varlamov and his people get into stride. Investigating a crime scene, evidences and the results of medicolegal proceedings they figure out a psychological makeup of a maniac and try to understand his true motives. They investigate thoroughly every step of a criminal and try to foresee his next step in order to prevent a new crime. At that, looking outwardly very successful, Varlamov is on the verge of an inevitable decline of forty and revaluation of his life. He intensely banishes thoughts about worthlessness of his work. No matter how much he works unfortunately it impossible to catch all maniacs. After solving another case Varlamov is advanced to the rank of lieutenant colonel. But later on the same day the evidence appears that Varlamov caught the wrong man. His method, on which all his work and career are based, has failed. Varlamov understands that someone is provoking him and trying to put him out of temper. But Alexander has no right to stop. Varlamov forgets about everything. The most important thing for him now is to catch this criminal. Saving another victim he is about to catch him. But Varlamov’s victory turns out to be sham. His daughter is kidnapped right away. Varlamov is in despair and doesn’t know what to do. His wife blames him for what has happened. He also blames himself. Alexander has a feeling that this is not the work of another regular maniac. He supposes his daughter was kidnapped to make him understand something and, most importantly, this kidnapper stands really close to him. Closer than he can imagine…
