Ivan Fyodorovich Gromov, an elderly but still strong man, lives with a big family on a farm in central Russia. His past is great. He served in assault forces, worked in the north on the large Soviet construction sites but today he is a kind of screw for his family and surrounding people. The family makes little of his opinion and already talks half-jokingly about his burial in the near future. His only joy about the family is his granddaughter Lilya, a beauty of 18. So, when the family, having faced heavy debts, designed to marry Lilya off against her will to the local oligarch’s son, a drinker and slacker Valerik, Ivan Fyodorovich, seeing that his granddaughter was ready to sacrifice herself in order to help the family to climb out of the debt pit, showed that he was early dismissed. Having pledged Lilya not to get married during two months, Gromov goes to the Magadan Region to his old friend who works as a head of a gold field in order to earn money and save his granddaughter from the ill-starred marriage. On the way the old man is trying to get together his friends with whom he worked at some time. He gets the gold filed, meets his old friend but finally stays face to face with cold and taiga. Only Gromov’s iron will, adamant character and a stroke of luck will help him to gain his point.
