The main character, a young man of thirty (Igor Khrustalev), spearheads a firm organizing practical jokes on demand. He is an actor by training but the theater carrier failed. Igor is something cynic and not married. His professional deformation is so great that even in regular situations he cannot do without a practical joke. He has got a partner (Stas) and some performers. The firm is on the rocks – few orders, people do not have money. In the beginning of the story a large businessmen Dolgozhilov, connected with criminals in the past, suffers a practical joke. He celebrates his anniversary and his friends have placed an order with Khrustalev to play a practical joke on him. A week later Dolgozhilov comes to Khrustalev with a request to play a practical joke on his young wife Alyona. He allegedly wants to make a part of his property over her but he needs to make sure that his wife is honest to him and will not run away after that. They have a child. Khrustalev has to try to “hook up” with her. And he agrees. Within a couple of weeks he manages to seduce Alyona but at that he really falls in love with her. He is going to tell her the truth but it’s late. Dolgozhilov’s people come. It has been found that Dolgozhilov needed the practical joke to divorce Alyona, take his son away and ensure against property claims. But in the court it has emerged that Alyona sussed Khrustalev out and played to him in order to smoke her husband out. Khrustalev is called as a witness. Dolgozhilov threatens Khrustalev demanding from him not to own to the order. Nevertheless, Igor supports Alyona’s words. The child and the greatest part of Dolgozhilov’s property are sentenced to her. Dolgozhilov is in a fury. Khrustalev tries to have it out with Alyona and organizes another practical joke in order to make her believe him. But she unmasks him again. The relationships are completely broken off. Khrustalev is depressed and beaten by Dolgozhilov’s people. After a while he gets information that Dolgozhilov has “ordered” a killing of Alyona. He tries to warn her but Alyona doesn’t want to hear anything thinking that it is another practical joke of him. The police also consider Khrustalev’s words nonsense. Khrustalev and his partners keep watch over Alyona and prevent the killing at just the right time. At that, Stas, Khrustalev’s partner, betrays him. Suddenly it turns out that it all was a practical joke and that it was Alyona who spread information on her “killing”. She fell in love with Khrustalev too, wanted to test his feelings and ordered a practical joke on him in another firm. During staging Khrustalev is wounded badly – somebody really wanted to kill Alyona. And Khrustalev saved her for real. Moreover, the killer was caught who said that Dolgozhilov organized the contract killing. The latter learned that Alyona was ragging Khrustalev and decided to take advantage of it. Dolgozhilov is arrested. Alyona goes to visit Khrustalev in hospital to have the whole thing out. But he doesn’t want to talk to her. On the way out Alyona is ragged again. And she understands that Khrustalev has forgiven her.
